Paul Whiffin
Damn, think the crank is ok? nightmare if you gotta buy a new 3.4 crank. Looks it, just pistons, block, sump and pump. Still a chunk of dosh I could do without spending though.
ManwithSupra
Really sorry to hear this mate, Hope you manage to get it sorted without too much expense (well as little as possible).
Paul Whiffin
The driftwaorks S15 seems to have suffered the same failure as you on sunday Found it here http://www.driftworks.com/forum/drift-car-projects-builds/29908-driftworks-s15-silvia-2jzgte-36.html looks like the exact same thing has happened. I wonder if there is a dodgy batch of oil pumps.

Paul Whiffin
Looks like I'm going to be building a temporary engine to use for the next couple of months. I really want to use a different piston this time around as I've never been happy with the cylinder leakage we have found with the CP pistons. Heavy breathing at idle and leak down tests aren't that great, its never hindered the power engine makes though. I'll be using Mahle Pro Series pistons http://whifbitzperformancetuning.co.uk/toyota-supra-engine-upgrades-mahle-p-2209.html with a stock crank for the moment as the pistons for the stroker kit are a special order item and wont be ready for about 6 weeks approx. It'll be a bit of a backward step in bhp and torque but it will have to do for the moment, just have to wind the boost up some more. 2.2 bar and race fuel here we come for the Snetterton straights! edge
At least you will back having fun before it all ends. Any idea yet what caused the pump to fail?
hodge
Well that sounds pretty savage. What sort of power do you estimate at that kind of boost.
Paul Whiffin
At least you will back having fun before it all ends. Any idea yet what caused the pump to fail? Nope, all I can put it down to is a faulty oil pump, I see no other reason.

Paul Whiffin
Just finished screwing the rebuild engine together, all looking good, going to install it in the car tomorrow. I wonder what the difference is going to be now I'm using a stock crank again, be interesting as nothing else has changed. I did a leak down test when I put the head on and I had the best results I've had on a built engine so far, 15% leak by on all cylinders. I put this down to the pistons/rings as I'm now using the Mahle Pro Series. Previously I was using CP pistons and we've never been able to get anywhere near this. For anyone building a forged engine the Mahles are definately the way forward, proper quality pistons, one of the best you can get anywhere. And they are reasonably priced to, no more expensive than CP or JE, cant go wrong. Anyway, hopefully I'll get it started up tomorrow, going to spend all day on it hopefully. Paul Whiffin
Do mahle offer there pro series in 86.5mm and with custom CR's paul?? Yep, 86.5mm or 87mm and you can have any CR you like if you dont mind waiting 6 weeks for them to be made. I'm having a custom set of stroker pistons made so I can get the 3.4 back together over the winter.

Paul Whiffin
Not the prettiest pistons in the world, they come coated as standard unlike others.

Lee P
Just out of interest Paul, are you getting the car up to full temp before doing the leak test?
Paul Whiffin
Just out of interest Paul, are you getting the car up to full temp before doing the leak test? No this was done on the engine stand, we always do the test on any engine we build to check for any problems before its fully built up and installed. Have you ever done any tests with CP's? Paul Whiffin
Just put up the report from the last round of Time Attack here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?p=2888455&posted=1#post2888455
Paul Whiffin
Well its all up and running, no breathing issues at all, these pistons are definately doing what it says on the tin. Just got to put a few miles on it, bolt some new oil coolers on and remap it. Cant wait to give it some abuse!
Pudsey
Great news that your back up and running. Only just seen that you have had some major bad luck recently. Fingers crossed your new build will be okay.
