Dazzi
I was driving to work this morning and I heard a metallic sound move through the middle of the car. When I reached 3400 revs I heard a loud rattle near the back where the exhaust is (stock exhaust). I thought some of the internals of the silencer box must of broken off but when I then pulled up to a junction I found myself battling with the clutch, obviously because the revs stuck at 3000 so had to dump the clutch before approaching the next one. The clutch seems to be fine, drove at 40mph in 5th and no slipping. The rattle now appears to be gone. When I pulled up to a lay-by I pulled out the Idle control plug but made no difference. The car sounds fine when running, no bangs or knocks, basically normal except the high revs. I took the car to my local garage and we both noticed the throttle lever and pedal was stiffer then usual to move then if it was switched off. There was nothing visually wrong with the throttle cable or valve, everything looked fine. I have never heard of this before, I know my car really well but this one has stumped me. The guy said it might possibly be a fault with the ECU, telling the engine to keep the idle high but im not sure if thats the cause... I'll hopefully find out in the next day or so
miko_supra
My first checks would be, sticking throttle cable, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, and also try an ecu reset too as it cant hurt. Conncl on here had some idle issues a while back with his n/a might be worth giving him a shout. I think it was a dud ecu in the end
Dazzi
Cheers Miko, The connectors looked fine on the ICV and TPS... will have to play around with one of them amp tester things I did reset the ECU last week as the revs were reaching 1200 but could try it again. The sticking throttle seems the obvious one, will have to double check that again too.

Just because the connectors look fine on the idle control valve doesnt mean its ok.They have a tendancy to get gunked up inside and sit open sometimes and give a high idle .Maybe worth taking it off and cleaning it with some sort of carb cleaner. Totally agree, im still going to check the connectors out though before anything else is done and move on from there. I only cleaned them last month with carb cleaner
Dazzi
Wow, problem solved. The rattle was an exhaust bracket that broke so welded that up again, and the very high idle was a screw missing off the throttle damper... Cheapest problem i've had!
