Was driving along today, the cat sensor and batt light started flickering, then stayed on, then dash lights died, then headlights, then the car died. Luckily it died as i was on my driveway. jumped it and i checked the pulley was spinning. everything seemed ok. im guessing this means the alternator is knackered?

dash lights wouldnt die before headlights

alternator would power all the car even if you took battery out

also battery would power most stuff for about 20 minutes without the alternator charging

check the voltage on the battery 13.0v plus (disconected)

check the voltage under load

check the voltage on the alternator output should be higher than on the battery terminals @ 13.8v

could be just the rectifier on the alternator

if alternator gone either have very high voltage eg 15v+ on output or very low voltage eg 11-12 v

check cells in battery aswell (need topping up maybe)

could also be a majot ground cable loose.

check grounds to engine block and grounds to body. and check battery terminals

put new battery on and if all electrics run ok you know its not battery

cheers for the reply, they pretty much died at the same time. will check the voltages etc and come back PS battery is less than 6 months old

if alternator faulty and overcharging it would destroy your battery in a few weeks by boiling it dry

i would check the grounds and connections before you assume its alternator
