RedM
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Run/8/Garmin_Forerunner_50_With_HRM_And_Foot_Pod_Set/5360032061/ It's a heart-rate monitor, running watch thing with a foot pod that measures how far you've run etc etc. Anyone have one? If so, how do you rate it?
Carl_S
Sounds fun. I'm in the market for a new watch since my baby-G started to croak. Could always change the battery though. That garmin will probably not suit my lines. But ancedotally I have heard of people that use such equipment, and find it is rather useful. Good for example if you are training for a marathon and have a need to measure how far you have run, so you can keep tabs on your progress. Shadow Beast
http://www.tritalk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=48480&highlight= Have a look at this site, its one i am a member of, some good advice on all sorts of HRM, depends on how much you want to spend and what your really going to want to get from it, if it just basic stuff you will be ok, but if your going to take things further then maybe next model up with the GPS which is the 305. How serious are you in running? are you just a runner to get fit on your own or do you compete in comps? only reason i ask is because i believe the 50 is not coded and it can pick up signals from other devices in the group when running. Also consider Polar stuff. hope this helps Richie

Polar are too costly for me. Even £89 is causing me to think very hard about it.
Carl_S
I hope you are strecthing before and after RedM, including achilles tendon stretches. I also hope you have a decent pair of running shoes ideally supplied by a specialist shop that does gait analysis. I applaud you for taking your fitness into your own hands (or legs in this case) and finding the motivation to set off jogging/running in this weather. Is it something you have been doing for a long time? I'm more of a treadmill guy myself.

colsoop
Do you really need to know how far you have run ? Are you trying to train in certain heart rate zones ? When i was trying to get fit i didn't bother with anything more than a basic polar heart rate monitor for around £40. It has heart rate, timer and calories along with training zones. colsoop
In that case it looks like a reasonable unit for the job. Happy running
Axle
Thanks for not being a lot of help at all. Yes to all your questions. Thank you for your involvement. Lol:d Grump. I was looking at these for my father in law. Apparently the GPS signals on them can drop out often, making them not very accurate at all. michael
Probably not what Martin wants (sorry) but I thought I'd post it here for future searches by healthy runner types. Nokia do a free app that works on their smartphones: http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/main/index.do Tracks speed and also plots where you've been so you can export the maps to Google Earth, I used to use it for car journeys and gentle strolls, it worked well. No use to anyone wanting to check their heart is beating though obviously. They do a step counter as well: http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/main/index.do I'm looking for something similar for my Omnia so if you come across such a thing on your travels can you let me know
RedM
Well, I took the plunge and ordered one of these at the weekend. It turned up today and what a great bit of kit it is. I went for the watch and foot-pod only. The HRM can wait for a bit. The pod synced with the watch on the first attempt. I drove to the local running track and set it to calibrate. 400m later it was ready. Spot on. I set it to measure everything and ran for three miles. Came home and downloaded the Garmin training centre software, plugged in the wireless receiver and voila! the watch says hello to the PC and a minute later the data is now on my PC and I'm looking at charts showing my shocking mile times! If any runners on here are looking for a gadget like this then I can't recommend it highly enough.
Shadow Beast
pleased you like it, i am looking at the 405 at the moment it has a few more things that i need. So its all go now then for you? you now know next time you go out you'll be wanting to push that little harder to see when you get back if you beat previous sessions!! it will get addictive. Enjoy Richie
RedM
Cheers. I've just started running on a track in a bid to increase time/distance in an easily controllable manner. I found it much easier than the hilly road runs that I'm used to. Can't wait for the next run.

RedM
Just wondering if you are still using the Forerunner 50 and how do I find it now you have owned it a while? It cost me £50. At that price I'll still be using it when I'm dead. It's pretty good. The only troublesome aspect is the calibration of the footpod. If you run too much faster (longer strides) or slower (shorter strides) than when you calibrated it the reading goes out. The footpod, while being light years more advanced than a simple pedometer, still uses the same principles. If you run the same distance using different stride lengths it only 'sees' the footstrikes and uses those to calculate the distance. Does that make sense? Despite being calibrated to a 400m lap of a track it was about 150 yards out when I went for a three mile run on the hilly local roads. TBH it does the job to my satisfaction. If I was more serious and better off financially I would go for a GPS watch though.
RedM
Holy thread resurrection! Does anyone have a Garmin 405 or 310 XT? If so, what do you think of them? I've kept going at this running lark (I'm now miles from home) and I'd like something more accurate with more info. If not a Garmin GPS watch what about other recommendations?
