Smellywelshman
Dead easy to check the alternator to see though (after checking the crank pulley), just put a multimeter across the battery when the cars on idle, a value of around 13v means its working ok and charging the battery. Less than this and its duff!
SteveR
Are your battery cables connected both adequately and securely?

Swampy442
If it is the alternator, might be worth getting it reconditioned as opposed to getting a second hand one, at least that way you have a warantee.
and1c
As others have said, crank pulley is the obvious suspect if all ancilleries failed. You can manually check it by hand if the car wont start.See is there is any play or any visual damage up close... Or// remove the battery, stick it on a charger overnight (you need to do this asap anyway, a good pulse charger really) and then start the car the next day. ONLY to check the crank pulley though. As others have said, if its gone that badly then it will not spin true...andy wobbles and thats the culprit and you should have it replaced by someone who knows what they are doing....! supraspeed
charged car up to the point of starting it. checked for wobbles on pulley when blipped throttle and seems not to alter position. quite hard to see though through other moving parts.....nearly took my face off from the fan lol. Just out of interest can you see the alternator spinning or moving normally? just when i looked at that when engine is going, it doesn't seem to do anything (unless it normally just sits there motionless)

supraspeed
ok this is what i'm seeing. now in one of the pics with the alternator with arrow, should this be moving (flux looking bits inside alternator) the belts are moving alternator pulley fine. Now the wire coming from the alternator in 2nd pic is bit thin and worn and not sure if it looks like its working. the 3rd pic highlights the symbol next to the battery which is always on but the battery has gone off ( i assume by charging it) is this the alternator symbol? also what does this oil symbol mean in pic 4 as its lighted up now even though i topped up the oil sunday? Smellywelshman
It means overheating cat mate (according to alot of people on here when I asked!) Those are the exact same lights that were coming on when my alt was shot! O/H cat when the car was being started from cold and all that. Things just go a tad bonkers when the alternator goes apparently... Get the charge on your battery checked out, I'll bet you'll see a figure of around 9v as the alt isn't charging your battery! Smellywelshman
By the way, were your turbos going mental at the time everything else was going wrong? Spooling up and whistling even though you were nowhere near being on boost just before everything went dead?
RobSheffield
The oil can with a level below it means low oil.

supraspeed
ok just did a simple battery test on the alternator and looks likes its busted- must be internal as the belt drives the pully but flux doesn't move so somethings gone. car must have been purley running off the new battery all the time. time for a new alternator me thinks. RobSheffield
Id be looking at that alternator to find out why its not working, then id be panicking as to why PAS went, unless you just meant it stopped because the engine had died. My PAS went around 30secs before the engine died when this happened to me as well. New alt sorted everything mate.
