Chris Wilson
I have the need to be in contact with people in the USA and France a LOT during the next few months, so have taken out a contract with Skype for world dialling. At the moment I am using a very cheap headset and microphone, or the microphone and speaker in my laptop. I am thinking of getting a dedicated Skype phone, or even a mobile with Skype connectivity. Anyone got any recommendations? Thanks.
grahamc
My missus use skype a lot to chat to family in South Africa, so I am interested in this as well. What mobiles use skype?
JustGav
Not the cheapest option, but it would give you that 'normal' telephone feel rather than having to sit at the PC talking to it thing http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NDONPM/interactiveda3036-

Carl_S
Skypephones S1 and S2. http://www.three.co.uk Or buy a £9 monthly contract and pay £15 extra a month for unlimited international uk to usa/france calling.
Alex
Skype is excellent you won't regret it...I too must get a bloomin phone though as I now work from home and call people worldwide. FWIW there is a subscriber pack for calling world wide which is £80 for a year but you can get an actual phone number with it and VM's etc... As for the handset, the ones on their website look good...however a headset maybe clearer and keeps your hand free when you're on long calls. Pete
Hmm..I *think* we have some in the showrom that are like mobile phones. Remind me to take a look.

The Restorer
I got one of the Belkin wi-fi ones. Wouldn't recommend it. Extremely slow, poor battery life and echo during calls.
JamesG
I bought a Linksys PAP2T VoIP adapter. http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/MFR/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3508 It plugs into your router and gives you two phone sockets that you can plug a regular phone into. I use my cordless DECT phones with it. You then need an account with a SIP provider such as sipgate. I was also assigned a local geographic number, so people don't even know I'm on VoIP instead of a regular phone line.
MrRalphMan
After the outlay, how much are you saving? What type of calls do you make?
JamesG
After the outlay, how much are you saving? What type of calls do you make? Was that question directed at me? If so, I don't use mine much. It's mainly so I can have a landline but not pay line rental. So I'm saving up to 120 quid/year.
mrdsukautos
Are you with BT for your internet chris? if so consider the HUB 2 option and you get those calls for 1pence a minute proper broadband phone and a number with it also I use it all the time and never have any problemns with the service Indeed i use it instead of my landline now as it works out cheaper all round
Homer
Skype seems to have passed me by, whats the deal with it? Are phones calls free? My phones bills (have 5 of them!) are about £1k a month total as I'm calling the US/Asia all day - thankfully the company pays for most, but I like the idea of free international calls! Never been a fan of skype.. I prefer the proper supported VOIP style of SIP. It would be worth in your case of finding out if the company has a VOIP gateway in the US and ASIA, then it would be free
Alex
Skype to skype = always free no matter where you are in the world. Skype to other country landline = local rate call Skype to other country landline with a subscription that covers that country = free :D
Homer
Cheers guys It might not be the solution I was hoping for, though I'm dialing abroad about 50% of the numbers are mobiles. The rest are landlines which tend to be either UK, US or Philippine based. Still, if the contact covers those 3 locations it could work out to save quite a lot of money. Going to go and take a look at some sites now
Pete
sipgate.co.uk is the SIP provider I use with a VoIP client on the iPhone to call Greece.
