hogmaw
I can't speak for an X5, but my 2001 Vauxhall Astra LPG is now 8 years old and has had ZERO problems in that time.

Cheers, what are you paying for lpg ? looks like its between 40 to 50p per litre around B'ham. Do you get a small refund on your car tax ? although not worth shouting about as the X5 v8 is £400 per year i think at the moment.

PJ
A couple of guys on Club Aristo run their Aristo's on gas with no issues at all. It was something I was planning to have done to my 4.6ltr Rangey.

I had it quite a while ago on a Range Rover, the one in my avatar but it wasnt multipoint injection and on a 3.5 v8, it seemed ok but didnt have it for long as the RR got a new 4.6 fitted and all stripped out for the desert. Yes about 50p a litre here in London ie half the price of petrol for the same performance. No brainer IMO (and free congestion charge here) No difference in tax ie £150 a year, though it may be different with a different car
Dnk
The X5 on pistonheads is now sold, bugger, that had all the spec and colour i wanted and seemed very well priced compared to most i'd seen on autotrader Oh well get looking again

The government don't make things easy do they? I thought any kind of discount would be automatic as they KNOW it is dual fuel already! Yep 44p is super cheap. That comes from living oop north no doubt

Carl_S
I had a skyline running on lpg, for about a year. Imagine having to refuel a ferrari with a foul smelling aerosol, that could refuel your car at 20pence a litre. If this doesn't put you off then just go for it mate. If you get it, you could put some green "i run on LPG" stickers on it, to calm treehuggers, and give yourself a green halo.

Carl_S
Oh yeah, engine wear. I heard that engine wear is reduced on cars running lpg only because it burns cleaner than petrol. Not sure if anyone with knowledge on this can confirm it. But if you are only concerned about price, and whether it is going to harm your engine or not, and don't care about the smell of rotten eggs, then go for it! Scooter
I've heard you can get valve seat recession on some engines but this is overcome by using Flash lube in the system.

But if you are only concerned about price, and whether it is going to harm your engine or not, and don't care about the smell of rotten eggs, then go for it! yep i had a rover 216 running on lpg for a while until the system knackered up! one of the hardest things is finding a garage who know how to fix problems/service the lpg system - it is costly! overall, the car ran well, the smell is bad when you fill up - but when it's running on lpg you can hardly notice it (depends on how rich/lean your settings are) i would only ever consider getting another LPG car if it was a 4x4 and if the tank was located in a safe place - my rover had the tank in the boot and no doubt if it got shunted in the rear in a bad accident it would blow up oh and as for the engine running cleaner, it's true - i stripped out my old engine as the timing belt had snapped and was amazed to see how clean the pistons etc were
dangerous brain
Availability will be your biggest issue. Even if its available prevalently where you live it may not be everywhere you go. The car obviously will run on petrol but booger me its expensive over gas. That said diesel is starting to price itself out of the market now
Thorin
got a new 4.6 fitted and all stripped out for the dessert. Planning on transporting a lot of cakes? My only experience with LPG was in crappy old Protons that used to cut out when going round tight left hand bends at any kind of speed. Carl_S
Interesting God, my car - the skyline - also used to cut out very occasionally on very slow tight bends on LPG I believe. Wonder what that is about. Penguin I think there are many many safety considerations that have been taken into account in LPG tanks that make them as safe as, or even safer than the petrol tanks, or so I have been told. hogmaw
Every time one crashes this happens... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/northamptonshire/7816131.stm EVERY time eh? Where did you get that FACT from? There are plenty of times I have heard of vehicle fires where LPG has not been involved. LPG tanks are as safe if not safer than petrol tanks. FFS petrol is pretty damn explosive too!!!
