Matt H
Just a question about a beta release.. If everyone is downloading this version for free and its pretty much complete, how does MS ensure that it sells release versions to the same people who downloaded the beta? Wez
I am guessing the beta release can be turned off and will require payment to restore/upgrade.
Matt H
So its a glorified 30 day trial then? So why are people so eagerly trying to get it then, seen as though it will not be a replacement for your system due to it only being active for so long? Are people that download betas supposed to give feedback then to the developer? i presume thats the purpose?
Thorin
So its a glorified 30 day trial then? 1st of August. There'll no doubt be another beta or release candidate before then which will extend the date further. But yes come the release of the final version you'll need to upgrade to that to continue using it.
Wez
Are people that download betas supposed to give feedback then to the developer? i presume thats the purpose? Yes, there is a feedback icon on the desktop for this purpose.
Wez
Only issue I have found so far is that my Lotus Notes will not launch, I may need to look at a newer version of the client
ry4n
Are people that download betas supposed to give feedback then to the developer? i presume thats the purpose? That's about the crux of it. I just like new stuff to play with. Beaten to it.

Matt H
So someone like me who knows little about the programming side of computers, would it be a bad idea to download this for my home PC or will it cause me hassle?
stevie_b
The main hassle it would cause you is having to back up everything so that you can restore it later should things go bad. I haven't used it, but I would guess it's fairly stable. Do you have a spare hard disk and/or computer to put it on? Remember that it's only good until August this year. At that time, you'll need to either scrub it and roll back to XP/Vista or get a proper copy of Windows 7.
Pixelfill
also bear in mind there is no upgrade path from the beta - AFAIK you'll need to install the new operating system from scratch. Mike

creative
So someone like me who knows little about the programming side of computers, would it be a bad idea to download this for my home PC or will it cause me hassle? as others have said its only a beta so may be unstable and you will lose your data if it royally fooks up. you could install it as a dual boot on your HDD provided you have the space or the easier option is to have it on a separate HDD and use it alongside your current OS. Thats what im going to do and then it can be formatted if it all goes wrong
Pete
It's available as a VMWare image on their Appliace site. Downloaded it and got it running on OS-X just fine. It's just another version of Windows, but aimed at businesses without all the guff as far as I can see.

Wez
I upgraded the Notes client to v8.5 today and its working a treat. Looked a bit deeper into the OS and disabled a few unwanted services which reduced the memory footprint and quickened the overall feel. Liking it so far, basically Vista without the crappy security middleware/nagware.

Axle
Is it too late to download and install this? Also how do i install this? I have been informed i will need to create a disc, but not told how? Want to try it on the laptop, as it could do with a fresh install. Scott
Is it too late to download and install this? Also how do i install this? I have been informed i will need to create a disc, but not told how? Want to try it on the laptop, as it could do with a fresh install. The download is an ISO iirc, its an image file of some sort anyway. You can use any burning software that is compatible with ISO files (most of them). Personally i used Nero as its my favourite but its up to you really. The installation is an absolute doddle. Its always a good idea to start completely from scratch in my opinion so you are in an ideal position. When you turn your laptop on take note of the F-Key options. If there is one that says boot options, or boot sequence or anything like that then it would make life easier as when you have created your disc you will want to boot directly from it. I don't know how much you know about the bios and boot up configuration so i'll just say that you need to set the CDROM/DVDROM as the first boot device so that it will read the disc and boot from it before it starts loading whatever OS is on your HDD. After that its an absolute doddle. I can't believe how easy windows is to install now compared to all the clicking and configuring of years ago. When it comes up asking what drive you want to install the OS onto select "Advanced" (i think) and delete all the partitions (as long as you don't have anything on the laptop at all you want to keep, ie on a secondary partition), the one exception would be the recovery partition if you feel you would want to keep this (i never do). Once you have done that you can either create 1 partition, or create a couple so that you can use them as secondary drives for backing up etc. Anyway, feel as if i have gone way past what you asked lol. No point in going on if you already know what your doing. Good luck

Just a small word of caution for Axle: if you delete your recovery partition (assuming your laptop has one, most do these days), you'll make it difficult for yourself to re-install the original operating system (e.g. Windows XP) without you having to buy a new license.
