So its a glorified 30 day trial then? So why are people so eagerly trying to get it then, seen as though it will not be a replacement for your system due to it only being active for so long?

Are people that download betas supposed to give feedback then to the developer? i presume thats the purpose?

The main hassle it would cause you is having to back up everything so that you can restore it later should things go bad. I haven't used it, but I would guess it's fairly stable.

Do you have a spare hard disk and/or computer to put it on? Remember that it's only good until August this year. At that time, you'll need to either scrub it and roll back to XP/Vista or get a proper copy of Windows 7.

So someone like me who knows little about the programming side of computers, would it be a bad idea to download this for my home PC or will it cause me hassle?

as others have said its only a beta so may be unstable and you will lose your data if it royally fooks up.

you could install it as a dual boot on your HDD provided you have the space or the easier option is to have it on a separate HDD and use it alongside your current OS. Thats what im going to do and then it can be formatted if it all goes wrong :rlol:

I upgraded the Notes client to v8.5 today and its working a treat. Looked a bit deeper into the OS and disabled a few unwanted services which reduced the memory footprint and quickened the overall feel.

Liking it so far, basically Vista without the crappy security middleware/nagware.

Is it too late to download and install this? Also how do i install this? I have been informed i will need to create a disc, but not told how?

Want to try it on the laptop, as it could do with a fresh install.

If you're having to ask the above questions, you probably shouldn't do.

The download is an ISO iirc, its an image file of some sort anyway. You can use any burning software that is compatible with ISO files (most of them). Personally i used Nero as its my favourite but its up to you really.

The installation is an absolute doddle. Its always a good idea to start completely from scratch in my opinion so you are in an ideal position. When you turn your laptop on take note of the F-Key options. If there is one that says boot options, or boot sequence or anything like that then it would make life easier as when you have created your disc you will want to boot directly from it.

I don't know how much you know about the bios and boot up configuration so i'll just say that you need to set the CDROM/DVDROM as the first boot device so that it will read the disc and boot from it before it starts loading whatever OS is on your HDD.

After that its an absolute doddle. I can't believe how easy windows is to install now compared to all the clicking and configuring of years ago. When it comes up asking what drive you want to install the OS onto select "Advanced" (i think) and delete all the partitions (as long as you don't have anything on the laptop at all you want to keep, ie on a secondary partition), the one exception would be the recovery partition if you feel you would want to keep this (i never do).

Once you have done that you can either create 1 partition, or create a couple so that you can use them as secondary drives for backing up etc.

Anyway, feel as if i have gone way past what you asked lol. No point in going on if you already know what your doing.

Good luck :)

Just a small word of caution for Axle: if you delete your recovery partition (assuming your laptop has one, most do these days), you'll make it difficult for yourself to re-install the original operating system (e.g. Windows XP) without you having to buy a new license.
