windows 7 beta

Let's have some screenshots of it looking really pretty then. Chop chop.

I'm struggling to find anything outstanding to show you yet. :search: The default background is quite nice.

Think Vista with all the fancy Aero bits turned off by default, and a strange random task bar. I just ran the Windows performance index and it's turned all the aero bits on. but seems faster than Vista ever did.

have a look around the os for a few hours, the wallpaper designs are interchangable and blend seamlessly at set durations to save you geting bored of the same background, the aero effect is even more customisable, the windows explorer 8 has a good effect if you have lots of windows open hover over the taskbar icon, you will see what i mean. the full system is easier to navigate to using the everhauled filestructure and as you can tell aswell as a lot of other massive updates it runs very fast with all graphic effects on full.

how vista SHOULD have been from day 1 imo! lol

ignore the geeky bird, but heres a few of the features. it has tons more including media player 12 etc..

Got a few questions about this OS some of you might be able to answer....

I've just installed it on my laptop...

P4 3.2 Prescott

1GB DDR2 Ram

256mb Dedicated GFX

I'm not sure if Aero is operational. When a sound plays, such as the intro, it seems to echo and almost stutter as if the processor is being over used. Everything seems to be running fine as far as i can tell but i have no performance index. I've ran it a couple of times and even though it says i have ran it, i still don't get a score. Is there a manual way to check the aero settings?

I'm not finding this as flashy as Vista at the moment but i'm guessing Aero might not be running?

Edit, Just found out Aero is working as all the toys seem to work. Everything is running great cept the audio :( Trying to get past that now.

amazing how we users put up with this....

Well really driver release is down to manufacurer's.. its amazing how many dont bother updating them, but vista and windows 7 have backwards compatability with a lot of drivers, so occasionally you will find xp drivers etc will work! :)

Anyone got windows mail working yet? I installed it along with the latest MSN but when i click on it nothing happens. It goes into the system tray but if i right click on it and select open it does nothing. If i right click on it and select new message it comes up but won't let me send anything. Seems like a core error with it. Just wondering if its a dodgy install on my part or whether its a common fault.

Well its installed and just doing some driver updates, seems pretty slick and isnt at all laggy at the moment.

I have since install put all the applications i use back onto the system, as I had it in Vista. so far everything works a treat. just over threee weeks of usage and aside from a few crashes and re starts, about three in total.. its solid. this pc is on roughly 24 hours a day too as its the main media server for the other systems in my house! :)

Yeah I got Kubunto one one laptop and Ubuntu on the other.. there solid too.. Plus the fact totally free, you cant go wrong! :D

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my main drive. I really fancied trying KDE 4.2 so figured I'd give Kubuntu 8.10 a try on a spare drive. Very nice.

Quick question: Do you reckon you can get Vista, Ubuntu 8.04 and Kubuntu 8.10 onto one drive (three partitions) and still have a happy Grub?

Strange, i tried to re-install it but it keeps doing the same thing. I think i opened explorer while it was installing so maybe thats done something.

I'll do a re-format and see if that cures things, once i get back :D

Thanks for letting me know.

Hmm I would say in theory it should work although i have to be honest and say i have not tried a dual boot with two versions of linux, let alone two linux and windows.. you will need a lot of space for partitions though i would have thought as the swap files for linux will take up a fair bit, min i would use for each linux install is about 15gb, windows should run in around 10gb but add to the factor your gonna want storage space also..

I had ubuntu 8.04 but there was no sound support strangely for my system, however 8.10 sorted that a treat :)

well after getting a version that would auto setup and a genuine beta key.... I got it all installed and turns out my spare drive I using is fooked.

reconnected my other drive to use xp and I now have to re validate windows.

what I did get to play with was ok. Ive never had or used vista so it all looked a little strange. I liked the way it auto installed the correct drivers for the mobo etc but unfortunatly trying to install my logitech camera drivers caused it to crash and BSOD. part of this is down to the drive though.

anyone got a spare drive kicking about they dont want? ;)

[naieve]Is there any reason why you couldn't have both Linux' using the same swap file drive, and for that matter the same user partition and just have 1 /boot and 2 separate / partitions?

Sharing swap partition is fine. It's always a good idea having a separate partition for /home and yes sharing that between the two distributions would be fine.

There potentially could be a few issues if you're using the same user account in both and one distro is using KDE3.5 and the other KDE4.x for example, but it should be fine.

You could always just use separate usernames for logging onto each distro.

As I understand it having two different installs of one OS will cause issues when their kernels are updated.

At the simplest it would mean going into Grub and manually sorting it out. I might just stick to running Kubuntu 8.10 as a persistent install from USB.

Has anyone managed to download the ISO image either today or yesterday? I still can't get it to work for me: the download manager appears when I click the big Download Now button on MS's website, and the download manager attempts to start the download, but it just stops immediately with a status of "error". No other details at all: not particularly helpful! The IT guy here reckons it's not blocked, but I'm not so sure....
