Asthma

Anyone on here suffer from asthma?

I have no idea what just happened to me but i was absolutely floored by my breathing. Since i was a kid i have had a few strange things happen to me with regards to allergies and breathing. In the winter i always get hayfever like symptoms, i'm pretty sure its during the transition from hot to cold places and vice versa. I could also start wheezing while doing light excercise or whatever. A few times i went to the docs and they would blame chest infections, or whatever, but what hit me tonight frightened my wife so much she almost phoned an ambulance.

I started wheezing quite heavily, i had felt it before so didn't panic. It got a lot worse than normal, to the point where i just had to lie down and concentrate on keeping calm. I managed to slow and concentrate my breathing. I didn't quite get it back to normal but it was at an acceptable level. This lasted for about 20 mins where i went downhill again. The 2nd time it happened it got really bad. I was struggling to breathe out as well as in. I have read that struggling to breathe out is normally assosciated with asthma? I was starting to worry but trying hard not to panic so fobbed it off with the wife even though i could hardly speak.

Right now i am feeling not too bad, i'm still wheezing but i'm controlling my breathing to try and calm it down. A few months ago i had a browse around and found this Linky which seemed to describe my symptoms to the letter. I have never ever experienced what happened tonight though. I'm not the type of guy to go to the doctor or the hospital unless my arm is falling off. My wife was crying at the state of me and i still wouldn't go so she was ready to phone an ambulance, thats how bad it got.

Any ideas? I'm almost positive i'll be absolutely fine tomorrow and if i go to the docs i'm going to get told the usual chest infection rubbish. I don't think i have serious asthma as i have never needed an inhaler and i knew what to do to relax the muscles for breathing, but i would like to hear from anyone with this sort of experience.

I never knew what breathing difficulties felt like till now, i couldn't even blow my nose i had so little breath. Bloody scary!

Sorry for the long thread, wanted to try and get as much info in as i could.

A colleague died recently (12 months ago almost to the day) from a pulmonary embolism (blood clot on the lung). Symptoms were struggling for breath.

The same week I was rushed into hospital coughing up LOTS of blood (ruprured blood vessel caused by untreated pneaumonia).

Don't risk it, get youself down to A&E NOW!!!

Edit - Those symptoms in the link appear to be very mild compared to what you had. Did you suffer from blurred vision, or dizzyness or even lose consciousness?

I came close buddy but honestly, i'm 95% ok now. I've been coughing up phlegm.. and deliberately.., sorry grose i know, but nothing else.

This is the first time it has happened, although its not a shock because of my previous symptoms, so i'll get myself down to the docs and try, most likely in vain, to explain what happened.

I'm thinking an inhaler might not be a bad idea though. Even if i borrow one, i understand they all do pretty much the same thing (muscle relaxant) and something is always going to be better than nothing. That way if it happens i can quickly deal with it then get to the root cause of the problem.

i agree get yourself to A&E if breathing is that bad. I know my hubbys is Asthma tho. My daughter was rushed to Hospital few months ago with breathing dificulties too they thought it was Pulmonary Embolism but after tests it ended up as a very bad chest infection so could be that too.

If you're struggling to breathe in a normal environment then you do need medical help.

I had breathing problems hit me suddenly a few years ago and couldn't get to sleep so went to hospital. After being discharged and then re-admitted again shortly, it turned out I had some sort of bronchial pneumonia and have had a resultant asthma condition ever since that requires a couple of inhalers used daily.

Don't worry about seeking help.

As i say, i'm fine honestly. It was a bit of a scare and if i get anything like it again i'll certainly be at A&E. Typical male thing, you think it will pass after a few mins..... and every few mins you tell yourself the same. This lasted over 2 hours before i eventually got over it.

As i say, when i was younger i would go to the docs the day after feeling like i did (not on the same level but similar) and they would either find nothing wrong from their tests, or put it down to a chest infection.

The link i put in my first post describes EXACTLY what has been happening to me previously, this tonight was just up a few levels from what i had experienced before.

Oh, something to add. I have 4 cats and i am allergic to a certain degree. If they scratch me the scratch bubbles under the skin. They can also make me sneeze and breathe funny but again.. its intermittent. Its really strange, its as if one min i'm allergic and the next i'm not.

I agree with you guys though, i need to see someone who knows what they are talking about. I just hope i can find someone who will listen and take notice rather than the usual GP incompetence i'm used to.

I think what everyone is saying is GET DOWN TO A&E NOW as its better you get checked out than die in your sleep tonight.

I think you'll agree?

You had it twice in a row, and the second time was worse. Anything could trigger another attack, and if it is worse will you be okay???

I do mate, i really do. If i wasn't back to my regular self i would be down there right now. I'm positive it was an asthma attack, something i'm not used to but something i need to deal with. Its certainly not anything as bad as you went through. If i thought i was remotely in danger, or if i saw any blood, i would be down there right now and not posting on here.

I'll check-in in the morning :)

thanks

Scott, have you been worrying alot lately? Or in general?

Not at all mate, in fact i just finished up work today as i'm off on my holidays on tuesday.

I was thinking about stress related, or anxiety, but i can't think of anything, even under the surface, that would be bothering me.

Kayla on robs account, whoops!!

If you ever have breathing trouble you should always go to A+E, even if you dont think you should

I think you will find that the phlegm you cough up is the result of a chest infection, or the ending of a chest infection, which may have effected your breathing

Are you sure you wernt just panicking due to lack of breath? some people (im not saying you) think they are having an asthma attack, but infact they're having a very mild panic attack

You should NEVER borrow someone elses inhaler, at the end of the day it is still a drug :taped:

Im sorry if i sound like a mum, i suffer from low range cystic fibrosis and asthma so i know how you feel about breathing problems :( if i get really bad i have to have physio to help remove phlegm, its the only way i can breath sometimes

Right ok.

Other then Asthma, i was leaning to the fact that you may well have been having an aniexty attack.

Even somthing like thinking about your breathing, can trigger it.

I would also suggest people not jump to conclusions resulting in death.

Dont think your anywhere near death young man.:)

You did correctly in keeping calm though.

Its quite funny that both of you point that out as i went on a first aid course a few weeks ago. On that course i learned all about the signs of asthma attacks, panic attacks etc and what was actually going on with the body. Most of the time asthma and panic attacks are made worse by the victim getting scared and hyper ventilating.

I'm not sure what was happening with my breathing but i certainly wasn't panicking before or during the "attack". I've had it happen to me so many times i just carried on as normal. When it started to get worse i did get curious as to what was going on and when it eventually got really bad i just sat... almost meditating, concentrating on keeping my breath calm. In through nose, out through mouth etc.

If it wasn't for being on that course and knowing what to look out for i would probably be in an ambulance right now as i would have did myself more damage than the actual attack.

I see myself as a very conscious person. I can look at things rationally without panicking and i think my wife was doing enough of that for both of us (shows she loves me i guess :) ).

Not sure about a panic attack either. I've never even felt stressed in my life, nothing ever bothers me. I don't know much about panic attacks to rule it out, obviously, but i seriously doubt thats what it was... i'm just too laid back to panic.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm pretty sure i'm fine but after everyones advice i'll definitely be talking to my GP and not leaving until i find out exactly whats going on.

I felt exactly the same today!

I have had asthma since I was a child but learnt to control it without drugs. But today I had an episode (first one in about 5 years!) It was very bizarre but I put it down to a sudden drop in temp this morning as temperature can be one of the triggers for me.

Reading it mate, your right... but, i would be a greek god if i could crack one off for 20 mins, but hey, we can't all boast ;)

I'll definitely be going for a visit to the GP. At least now i'm a bit older and might get listened to.

I totally agree with you. Not really sure what to say with regard to your son. I was bullied in secondary school to a certain degree. I was 6'2 in 2nd year but was still bullied due to my good nature, i backed down from everyone. No other word for it other than traumatic. I just wish teachers/schools would be more proactive towards it. Most bullies are cowards, the ones that aren't are usually misguided idiots that follow the pack. Parents and upbringing in todays Britain is to blame, we are the victims. Unfortunately the solution is unknown :(

Makes for little consolation but the bullied always turn out better than the bullies.

My son is bullied to the stage where he has cut his wrists and arms i still see fresh cuts nearly every day so we are talking severe bullying,iv took him doctors cause of this and he also makes himself sick, the school dont do much and iv moved him 3 times to different schools and its followed him to all of them,he is a very goodlooking lad,he is 16 and always hangs about with girls and girls are always calling him and when im with him girls are calling him fit,its mainly lads that are bullying him and calling gay (which he is not) which he hates and had lads waiting for him that he dont even know to beat him up,he even goes out and gets pushed by lads he dont know too. My son is a very quiet boy and with a good nature like yourself.

Its an absolute disgrace that its only during real adulthood that having a good nature becomes a benefit. During school life being a nice guy and backing away is seen as week. I took OIS (office and information studies) in school, which was mostly taken by girls. I got a ribbing, i won't say bullied as its nothing compared to what your son is emotionally being put through, because it was seen as "gay". Personally i couldn't see what was gay about choosing a class full of girls in OIS over a class full of guys in "woodshop". I expressed my opinion in this and almost got a black eye for my trouble.

Thankfully there will be a light at the end of the tunnel for your son and i'm sure he will be a fine gent in his adult years. I can't even imagine how hard it is for, or to convince him that HE is the better man. Parenthood must be a nightmare in these situations. As much as i look forward to being a father i am honestly petrified of being a father in that sort of position.
