Cheap Flights... explain to me :D

Ok I don't get how this all works. Is there some sort of set of rules that mean that flights are cheaper other than time of the year?

For example, are the cheaper mid week? Weekend? Early? Late? Soooo many search criteria I don't know what I'm looking for anymore

I'm with you Rosie (wishful thinking)...

I can't understand how it makes financial sense to sell a ticket for a couple of quid, months before the flght !

I could understand if it was at the last minute if they were going to fly with a few unsold seats.

Went to Austria last year and it cost me £1.86 there and £15.00 for a sports bag (and just a bit more to return) - not complaining, just can't get my head around why

Argh if I could find them for £15 I'd book them!! I want to book them now because I'm one of those people who has to have everything arranged and all the i's dotted and t's crossed well in advance... just thought that there might be some kinda pattern to it. Maybe I'll look at varying the times of the flights...

Anywhere in June won't be too cheap, especially a main holiday resort.

You may find cheaper flights due to times and depending on departure airport as you say but that's not a guarantee for a cheap fair.

Bottom line is, you'll get cheap flights with crappy airlines to places less people tend to go.

HTH :D

Kos in June

I'm sure you could get a cheap flight nearer the time. The airlines have to sell an allocated amount of tickets, and if they reach their sales figures, then maybe they sell some off at the last minute just to fill the plane. They may also be cancelled tickets etc., so are available to buy again.

I used to do that sort of thing all the time, as its amazing what deals you can get, especially if you're not looking for accommodation as well. :)

EDIT: I used to use teletext, but nowadays you can find flights, and even car hire very easily through a decent amount of websites.

Just make sure (and you probably will do) that you go after half term holidays, which are usually the last week in May/beginning of June, as prices will be less.

I wonder if it's also worth looking into flight and accommodation deals?- then just not bothering with the accommodation when you get there...

I know that prices go up for Christmas, but I got a good deal with Emirates, becuase they had a promotion on.

But generally I know summer and christmas are more expensive, I think becuase they are peak times when people like to go abroad. Some people are able to book some time in advance and that saves money.

But that's all I know about that.

Some airline websites like BA list the price on the day and a few either side. Can often be a big difference, depending on the destination. With the budget sites you just need to play around with the dates to find the cheapest.

They don't always make sense though. I checked a flight from UK to Japan in May the other day. London to Tokyo was 500 quid, but on the same day in the opposite direction it was 6400quid. Both economy !!!

Generally it's best to book early. If you have the time and the patience you can get some good deals if you wait at the airport as a standby.

Cheapest I can find to Kos from a quick scour is £205.

I suspect the only way you'll get it cheaper is a last-minute deal from a charter carrier, booked around May, but that'll be a bit hit & miss, and you won't be the only one doing it!

Yeah - Schipol is a good choice - flying from here to Atlanta with BA, it was actually cheaper to fly from here to Schipol and get a Club World (the one with the bed/seat) flight from there than it was to fly in the standard World Traveller Plus direct from Heathrow.

Stupid thing was it was the very same plane! It flew from Schipol back to Heathrow before the Atlantic hop! Adds about 3 hours onto your journey, but worth it for the bed and (comparatively) decent food and drink.

The other great thing is that the flight back actually lands at Heathrow and then you're supposed to transfer to Gatwick for the return to Schipol, which means you can just check out your bags and go AWOL from Heathrow, so you don't have to do the Schipol link on the return.

Who'd work in the crazy travel industry, hey?! ;)
