Ewen
We all know that margarine low in polyunsaturates is good for you...relatively. Which is healthier, regularly eating margarine such as Flora, or not eating margarine at all ?
Alex
Olive oil based bertolli etc are best. Eating none probably better still
AndrewOW
I do really like Flora 'Buttery', and supposedly its got good monounsaturates, as well as polyunsaturates, so I assume that having them in your diet is better than not having them. Although I assume you can gain all that goodness from healthier foods anyway, like nuts and fish etc.

supra_aero
I'd have thought not having them at all would be better - I know of no supermodel or bodybuilder who would touch it given the choice.

jamesmark
Sod it, just go for the full fat and all the other bad things about it, Lurpak.
RedM
No marg is better than having some 'healthy' marg. My other half (who knows a thing or two about this kind of stuff) says that some studies have shown that polyunsaturates can be linked to cancer and arthritis. She also mentioned that polyunsaturated fats are unstable and will destroy certain cells in the body to render themselves stable. At that point her allotted 30 seconds was up and I went back to just nodding without listening.

Pete
Well I guess if it contains something to help lower cholesterol then that's good if you have high cholesterol - so if you don't eat other fatty rubbish to raise your cholesterol then maybe you're better off not eating Flora. Kranz
I thought the body actually needs fats to enable a lot of the processes of the liver etc to work???? There's some fats that are very important, but their names escape me....... probably Bill and Frank or something

Carl_S
Rather than be fixated on whether or not marg is good for you or not, look at the bigger picture: what else are you eating, and are you exercising? As a general rule of thumb, getting the bulk of your food intake from whole, natural, fresh foods, that have been not processed very much, is generally accepted as being the way forward for a balanced style of diet. Olive oil, garlic, onion, and ginger wont hurt too unless you loathe them. And I'd rather have a little knob of butter (SIC), than a big glob of marg what ever it contains. Fat is important in diet, and can also be got from oily sexy fish like mackerel, and nuts like almonds, and seeds like pumpkin seeds, as an example. It helps you absorb the fat soluble vitamins, A - for eyes, D - for bones, E - for skin, and K- for blood clotting. Remember vigourous sex is a good excercise, and I know I am digressing big time, but aim for 3 - 4 days of about 20 to thirty mins of exercise that really gets you puffed and that you enjoy. Like sex. Of course treadmill comes a close second for those not into an energetic shag. But to marg or not to marg, personally no, but if you can't do without it, then use it, don't be margeless and unhappy. Oh and a little more on fats: Going more for monounsaturated fats and fish oils (omega3) rather than the saturated or trans fats (artifically made fats blasted with hydrodgen) will probably help your HdL levels in your blood which can lower cholesterol and make your blood less sticky and less likely to form blockages in your arteries. Chat to your doc, and get a blood test if you are concerned, high cholesterol will not automatically spell doom and gloom, a lot risk factors are heriditary. Really sorry about the long post, know you just asked about marg, good or bad. I'll end on a positive: enjoy your food, it's one of life's great pleasures alongside sex and shopping for gagets, and driving fast cars. Carl_S
Ewen, I usually tell people 3 times a week every week, half an hour. But for some twenty mins is more realistic. Main thing is enjoy it, either during or after, and hopefully seeing and feeling positive results from it. Over a lifetime indeed!
