Hi,

Yesterday both myself and Mrs H started our healthy living diet. We both need to lose a bit of weight (2 stone for me, less for Mrs H ;)). The bet is that we can't go 3 months without any of the following; Alchohol, Chinese, McDonalds, Pizza, Kebab, Indian etc I will also not eat after 7pm in the evening.

We can only eat healthy foods and try to get a bit of exercise in between.

What do you think our chances are? Last night we both sat there thinking about having a beer or a bottle of wine but resisted. At about 10pm I was starving but had a pint of water to fill my belly a bit.

Only 89 more days to go......

Im doing the same :) i need to lose 2 stone as well...

It will get easier, your stomach will end up shrinking a little if you are not putting so much food in, then after a couple of months you will stop with the cravings for bad food (mcdonalds etc).

If you are eating healthy you will feel a lot better and this will help your will power as well.

You can eat after 7pm. It's a myth about not being able to digest it and it turning to fat.

Three months on a diet should be easy. If you really want to keep the weight off though you shouldn't be dieting per se. Change what you eat to stuff that is both enjoyable and healthy. It doesn't even need to be low or fat-free. A bit of fat is necessary and the right kind of fat can do wonders for your health!!

Above all, get some exercise. I've been eating healthily since April 9th. Mostly heart healthy foods rather than low fat. I've also gone from no exercise to being able to run five miles. Might not sound a lot but considering the shape I was in it's pretty good.

Also, without it being intentional and merely a by product of a lifestyle change, I've dropped from 19 1/2 stone to 16 stone. It's a slow drop. People I work with have dropped more weight faster but I reckon that when they get bored of their faddy diets or of going to the gym they'll gain weight again. I'll still be living my new lifestyle and steadily dropping.

Well done. We appear to be meeting in the middle, I'm just under 16 stone now.

I've decided I'm going to cut out the crisps, chocolate bar, and sometime can of pop I usually get with my sandwich at work every day.

does that mean we can't come round for 3 months as thats all we ever consume when we are at yours?:(

as a side note i will change my avatar back on the 12th day!

ps are there any rules governing the challenge e.g can't consume any of the above, in Wigan - however other towns are fine;)

No mate!! We must do this and I am the king of making exceptions in order to eat fatty food. I am going back playing footie and running a couple of miles every other night.

It's the time excercising that I will struggle with. By the time I have got home from work and got the kids washed and to bed etc I feel knackered and just want to loz about......

At 34 I really need to do this as it's all down hill from here......:D

Strange as it may sound, but exercising actually gives you more energy.

If I'm knackered on night shift and hit the gym for an hour, do a couple of miles etc... I find that I'm wide awake and full of energy. Plenty to see me through the shift and beyond when I'd normally be falling asleep.

I think you'll be alright if you do eat healthy, slow release carbs and also a good level of protein. The things you're cutting out are crash-foods which give a quick boost then you tail off.

Your diet will only be affective if your calorific intake is less than your calorific usage remember. You can eat salads and pasta and rice but if you're not burning a good amount of it you'll not lose weight.

If you're starving by 10pm try and make sure dinner is really good, a mix of protein and some carb if needs be. Maybe try and exercise so by 10pm you're tired and more concerned about rest than food. If you are upping your exercise though and hungry by 10pm you'll feel it in your muscles in the morning and that's no good either..

I think the key to losing weight isn't just going cold turkey on things like this, yes, moderation is a good thing but also you need to look at your lifestyle and ask yourself *why* you're eating this? Enjoyment? Most likely... but there are other things you can do than food for enjoyment.

I agree with RedM, look at your lifestyle in several ways, what you do with your time. Exercise, hobbies and interests will help avoid snacking and also temptation.

Do anything like a physical hobby? Kiting, surfing, cycling, drumming, boxing etc are good ways of keeping yourself occupied, fun and burning calories at the same time.

To answer your question though, I think the least active person will crumple if at all

Im also giving this a go to see if i can lose weight.

Ive cut out anything fatty such as chippers, chinese, chocolate, crisps , sweets (anything nice ).

Try to drink a few pints of water a day sometimes you body may only be thirsty but you think its hungry it also fills you up a bit and is good for your skin and flushes out the bad toxins in your body.

I'm going to two fitness classes to see how i go i'm dreading it as i hate exercising so i hope this is good :(.

I'm on it 5 days now and i'm getting use to it seems to be more habit than anything else and if you need to snack on something try a bit of fruit!!

good luck with the healthy living.

I've been on a huge health thing for best part of a year now, Christmas has been a massive disaster though so I'm having to really try to get back into the mind set again.

If you really want to do it, you will. At the end of the day it's not rocket science or magic etc.

The further you get into it the easier it becomes. I hadn't craved/wanted etc anything 'bad' for months before last week, now I've had sugar again I crave it. Once I'm over that again it will be fine. Honest :D

I reckon once you've started you'll actually start liking it, and miss it when you don't go. I never ever thought I would say that I 'love the burn' but seriously, after a decent run I feel awesome. Admittedly don't look so hot with the redness and sweating but who cares :D

You need not deprive yourself completely of these things you like. You can allow yourself what is known as a 'cheat day'. Reward if you like, for the consistent effort you have both put in.

So for example every sunday you can allow yourself one of those treats. But do not over indulge, ofcourse.

Diets in the long term just do not work. You need to look at the bigger picture. As mentioned by RedM i think it was, you require a lifestyle change. Its the only way to improve your health in the long term.

It's weird, I hated running, since, well, ever, even at school. Then this year I needed exercise to do with Stig that I could do in the dark that was higher impact than walking so it was my only option really and now I actually find myself wishing I was running if I'm walking. I think I broke myself.

Having successfully lost 6.5 stone in my late teens.

I found the key was to allow the comfort foods you crave every now and again or you will end up binging.

Set yourself small goals to begin with, preferably something achieveable, say lose 3 lbs in the next 2 weeks and build up.

Start a simple excercise routine, walking is good, maybe buy a cheap bike in the sales and get your heart rate up.

The little things do add up, take less sugar in your tea, don't butter your bread, try and reduce your carb intake, especially from sugary foods.

Portion control, use smaller plates ;)

There is another option thouigh if you want to eat all the bad foods - work your arse off at the gym :D
