Should I be worried?

Went out today for a quick blast, whilst out I noticed a scraping sound, stopped and found a small plate under drivers side, about level with the wheel had come loose. Plate is about 6" x 4" slightly curved and has a barrel with a cable running through it. With my limited knowledge I would say its around the bottom of the auto gearbox? No reason why it should have dislodged. Not able to get a picture until the morning, real concern is that there was a trace of oil on my fingers after having lodged it back into place to get home. Everything seems to be running fine.

Hopefully get it looked at this morning, if it is the shield for the fuelfilter what would the cable be running through the barrel? Let you know later.

What do you mean by "barrel"?

A photo of the part would get your answer quickest.

It won't be the fuel filter shield, that's on the passenger side. The autos don't have an inspection point, just a rubber cap which fits into the block to gain access to the torque converter bolts. Does the plate have a grommet fitted to it and the cable runs through this?
