At what point is a car considered "fast"?

Anything exceed 600HP is fast for me

As I said, below 600 HP is SIMPLE for me.

Veyron I considered FAST.

It's confusing though, I mean there are cars with less than 600bhp that are "faster" than the cars you've mentioned around a track or point to point... but are they slow in your eyes?

Give me some example :sly:

The 500 caterham that absolutely blitzed the veyron?

500 Caterham have top speed 150 mph while Veyron has above 250 mph, I don't think those two are comparable :p

You said over 600bhp, and now you are quoting top speeds?

For me there are production cars that can be labelled fast or very fast and then there is a very small niche market of extremely fast cars that are either highly modified 'very fast' cars, very expensive/powerful exotica (£100k++) or unpractical kit cars (Ultima caterham etc).

So for me fast cars are the mainstream sports cars and very fast cars are the top of the range sports cars a marque has.....

Some fast car examples..

BMW Z4 3.0

Porsche Boxster 3.2

Audi TT 225

Supra NA

Honda S2000

Some very fast cars...

M series BMW's

RS series Audi's

Honda NSX

Supra TT

(Most) 911's

I've kept to sporty models, but there are obviously very powerful cars like bentleys, Cayenne turbos etc that are certainly 'fast' as well, but perhaps not so much circuit fast?

So your idea of "fast" is top speed related only?

It's a combination, acceleration + top speed if lack of either one than it's not consider as fast car (In my point of view)

Rob, you missed this gem in your multiquote:

So you don't consider the Caterham R500 or cars like the Exige 240, KTM X-BOW, Aerial Atom etc to be "fast" then?

Ferrari F430 Scuderia isn't fast?

And 3 pages later:

Give me some example :sly:

Good job we weren't asking at what point a brain is considered fast :)

I know I'm probably just asking for you to confuse / frustrate me even more but you are now saying that a car is only fast if it's over 600bhp, has fast acceleration and a high top speed?

So what's an acceptable top speed? What if a car is limited to a certain speed, 155mph for example, but has the ability to exceed this? What it a car is limited to ensure it's tyres don't pop or it's gearbox doesn't explode but still gets to 155mph in a very fast time?

Going back to acceleration... what do you consider to be good acceleration?

As Ian has pointed out I've already given a few examples of fast cars that don't fit into your 600bhp+ bracket, do you need some more?

No, 0-100 in 10 seconds is ok. my supra did 0-100 in 7 seconds according to my time slip.

Fucking Nora!

Go through the back of Evo and look how many cars can equal or beat that.

Ferrari F599 Fiorano is 7.4

Carrera GT is 7.6

Ferrari Enzo 6.7

Konigsegg CCX 7.7

Caterham R500 Evo 8.1

On this point, regarding cars under 300bhp/ton or slower than 10 to 100, again looking in Evo makes what most people consider bloody effing fast "not fast" by your standards (such as a 550 Maranello)

I might be wrong but id have thought a stock supra could pull that off?

In just 3rd? I'll have a go but can't see it myself. Through the gears then maybe.

Given that we have a ridiculously low speed limit of 70 mph in this country.(Set at a time when most cars used drum brakes and stopping time was measured with a water clock) The figure that means more to most people is 0-60 mph times. Nearly all manufacturers use 0-60 in there technical data. However these times are very hard to replicate on the road, so only really good for blagging rights. Probably the most useful and usable measures, are those for acceleration times between 40-80, given that 80 on motorways is usually less than the speed driven by quite a large percentage of drivers.

Perception of speed is relative. What is fast in one persons experience can be quite slow in another. The set up of a car can influence how fast a car feels. 90 mph in a Nova with knackered suspension feels faster than an M5 traveling at twice that speed with its suspension set to comfort mode. One gives the experience of feeling like you are lucky to be alive whilst the other feels like sitting on a large sofa with surround sound.

From a personal view point my bench marks, 0-60 times need to be below 5 seconds to qualify as fast and top speeds need to be over 200mph. I think 320/ton also is a good comparator to be in the fast category. To be very fast, 0-60 should be sub 4 seconds, top speed over 210 and BHP/ton 400 or more.

The biggest problem is once you have experienced your fastest, acceleration or speed, you are left wanting more and more. The pursuit of higher and higher speed and acceleration is incredibly addictive.

which cars were those?

Name and shamePraise :p

One was the europeans fastest MR2 after mapping it to 755WHP and 555ftlb. Think that was 2nd gear.

The other was in a Dax rush cosworth turbo at 2bar of boost in 4th gear

And also thinking about it in another mr2 which is about 700HP outside SRR. Funny enough this felt the quickest, as the car was all over the place and didn't feel safe at all.

I have had to grab the screen many times with Jamiep but that was from Lateral G :D
