Vantage
Hi , does anyone on the forum own or know somebody who drives an SL55. Reason for the question is that my wife wants one, but she is a high mileage , motorway driver and I need my fears allaying that although awesome in power , it is useable as an everyday car Many thanks and all who read this post, have a SAFE and Merry Xmas

tooquicktostop
I would have thought the Sl55 was a perfect Motorway car all be it a bit heavy on fuel not many cars as comfortable and a lot of car for second hand market price

AndrewOW
to here.... He's definitely going to wish he never asked the question now! I think all the members of this fine club have an SL55 each, but don't tend to mention them much, as it not the place to do so.

Soonto_HAS_soop
Get something else for long motorway journeys, they eat too much fuel even if you are driving sensibly. Plus lots of power with shite traction control system, not good in bad weather.
Jellybean
Axel has the SL 55 AMG
j_jza80
Perfectly good cars, but heavy on the fuel as has been mentioned. The SL500 would be a good alternative (Would be about as quick as a BPU Supra, where the SL55 would be getting into single turbo territory)
Pig
The 55's are great IMO. Fast when you want and fine as a normal drive. Go for it if you can afford the maintainance and fuel.

Chris Wilson
A friend of mine uses an SL55 AMG as an everyday car, and it's given far less trouble than a newer Range Rover that's done far less mileage. Complex electrically, not as complex mechanically as I imagined, although the suspension has a lot of gizmos. If you want a fast, but heavy and thirsty sports tourer I'd say they were as good as most in that price range. I don't think Mercedes build quality, or corrosion resistance is anything like as good as it was though.
Chiefgroover
Didnt TRD3000GT (Chris Webley) buy a SL55 ?
Axle
Excellent cars. Very well built and as far as Motorways go, they exist to munch them up. If you do go for one, make sure to check the roof seals. On some early models they used to be prone to leakage and are an absolute pain to put right. Also with leaking roof seals, came faulty bootlid switches which have to be replaced. Be aware of that too. Other then that, theres not much else that goes wrong with these, other then your usual wear and tear issues. Engines are bulletproof, and 0-60 of around 4.5 means these beast are effortless and a joy to drive. Ofcourse service history of the upmost importance, main dealer being key. Expect avg MPG of around 12-16.
TRD3000GT
Didnt TRD3000GT (Chris Webley) buy a SL55 ? Yep I am on my second one now.. I traded out for a newer one. Im looking to change again after the summer in to something less heavy much brighter and more sporty.
Thorin
Bumping this to hopefully get a comment from Axle or TRD3000GT I'm possibly looking at replacing the Supra with an SL55 AMG. Any particular problems to look out for on '02/03 models? I read something about problems with the front suspension struts can be expensive to put right, other than that though they seem to be pretty damn reliable. What are servicing costs like? Is there anything expensive that needs replacing at certain mileage intervals that I should be aware of?
AndrewOW
Only possibly though?
