If it is then there was one crawling around in Basingstoke not that long ago... It had some how managed to climb into a squaddie's gear and arrive in Basingstoke...it was in the paper not all that long ago and it killed their pet dog... poor thing... I always thought that house spider's were those long legged spindly spider's - I don't mind them... But those big hairy things, I get them in my house all the time, one was going across my living room the other day...scared the crap out of me!! Most suprisingly though, there was this long spindly house spider which had just killed this big hairy one in my kitchen the other week... It had completely wrapped itself around the hairy spider...I thought it would of been the other way around...but hey what do I know... I was led to believe that they weren't all that big, and are very fast runners, but not very poisonous. They are something between a spider and a scorpion, IIRC. They are one our most poisonous spiders, but as their fangs are so tiny they can't bite us. We do have some poisonous spiders in the UK now, mostly illegal immigrants, I believe, but some especially nasty ones on a Royal Estate somewhere, which were only discovered a few years ago. EDIT: Here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/1396706.stm Yep, well it bit this dog so many imes that it just died... This isn't a joke but a member on here once got chased by a Camel spider...must have been quite scary! Well it must of been a Harvestman like you say but it wasn't a daddy long legs. It killed this big bugger, well and truely... I always thought that those spindly thngs weren't poisonous... Yeah I can believe it...it was only a matter of time before the invasion started... I was going to post this up on here but near my front door, there was this spider which was quite big and looked similar to this picture of these hairy ones... It had a very broad back with a brown diamond shape on it...poisonous?? Also, when I was working in a very nature oientated enviroment a while back now, I once had a False widow crawl down just inches from my face and it's web was so sticky!! It scared the life out of me I mean it was just inches from my face and the ironic thing was I was reading about a False widow the same day! Yes its a camel spider, huge isnt it Way too big for my liking!!

AndrewOW
some out in Iraq are the size of dinner plates, and they look hard as nails to go with it! http://teamgobi.com/news/?p=427 Interesting little critters. They grow to about 6" across. We have false black widows here in Eastbourne too, and they can bite too. Hastings has a unique species of poisonous spider in a cave near the seafront. And you think our little creatures are relatively harmless

AndrewOW
This camel spider that i put a link up of was bigger than a dinner plate Ah, but have you seen the complete photo? It shows the soldier's hand holding them like that, and they've been brought closer to the camera to make them look a lot larger than they actually are EDIT: You can see the soldier's jacket sleeve just to the right of the photo. They supposedly make good pets. Well kinda. they make great pets and are fairly cheap and easy to look after ! they make no sound and are clean ( compared to my cats and dog makes a nice change ) a chile rose is a great starter tarantula too as they're quite docile and hardy. Go for it you won't regret it ! I also have a mexican red knee, a colombian blood leg and a costa rican zebra but looking to get more been "into" T's for the last 5 years and have raised the goliath and red knee from spiderlings

Supra Size Me
Sorry may be like a stupid question but is she poisonous?? Yeah until it escapes... In answer to your first question all spiders are venomous to certain degrees, the goliath isn't very venomous as a species, as with all new world spiders ( americas inc s america ) but in her case the savagery of the bite and 1 inch long fangs means I don't directly handle her Have had one of my T's escape in the past ( was a mexican superb through a noob mistake of leaving the lid at an angle instead of sealed properly and he managed to prise the weight of the glass lid open enough to escape ! found him under the wifes baseball cap on her desk in the office. GazB
While in Zante this year we visited a small zoo that had reptiles only. Some we couldn't handle but it was great to hold a croc, lizards, a big fat toad, week old tortoise and snakes of all shapes and sizes, suprisingly my grandaughter loved the snakes. Freaked me to start with when she came walking towards me saying 'Grandad look' The Tarantula was amazing, so light hardly knew it was on my hand

Maybe next year get her something she likes to sweeten the deal mine loves spiders and snakes etc and the goliath is hers ! ( we also have 2 corn snakes ) so no bribery was needed here
