Missile
I've just moved into my new house and bought a tv dvd surround sound system. The whole system is working fine, My question is. . . At what height will the surround speakers work the best. The sub will always be on the floor. But i can't decide on putting the other 5 speakers near the ceiling or halfway down, Or near the floor. Anyone with any ideas opinions etc would be greatly appreciated. Annoyinly this is not in the Instructions.
JustGav
I've always understood that if they are standard speakers that should be halfway down, but I've mounted my centre surrounds near the ceiling and pointed them down. Seems to work well enough.
ivan
Same sort of level as the screen at the front. My brother has his rear speakers at head height but says that mine sounds better with the rear speakers up high. He's got an ear for these things too as he's a lecturer in audio acoustics. JustGav
Out of interest does anybody know what the perfect ratios should be for speaker placement for something like a 7.1 system. I've currently got floor standers next to telly for L + R, a set of small seperates for the surround L + R place 2/3s up the wall and line with the top of the telly. On the back wall is a set of NXT panels for the rear L + R, these again at 2/3 height. I'm happy with the way it sounds, but the geek in me would want to get it better
Missile
Think i'm going to go with a mixture of whats been said. Was going to put them all up ceiling level pointing down, But think i will go with mid way down the wall / Tv level. With the centre one maybe a little higher. I've got a KEF Centre and originally had it sat just below the telly, recently moved it above the telly and it sound image just seems more real now, I did however adjust the time delay which would also make serious change. Missile
Sound delay ? Whats this ?
JustGav
Sound delay ? Whats this ? On my 7.1 unit (and most units), you can adjust the distance the speakers are, this is a delay adjustment, ie it sends certain signals later than others to ensure that the sound image arrives in the sweet spot at the same time. Wez
Depends on the speakers, with little satelite jobs I put them at ear level when watching the TV, works ok for me. Some surround sound setups allow you setup an offset for where you are sitting.
Carl
I think pretty much as has been said. I generaly try to keep all the speakers at ear height when you are sat down on your settee. The rear surrounds can be placed pretty much at any height. I have seen them on the wall facing down and this works well although I personally have them either side of my seating. Problem with most people's Lounge is that the shape of the room rarely allows a pefect setup of your speakers so you have to make allowances anyway. Missile
Oh right i see. Mine has a picture of a seat, This is the middle, The speakers are around it, You can adjust the distance, So i guess thats how i adjust the delay on my little system. 7.1 must sound very very good. It has a funny demo when produces a sound from each speaker as it goes from speaker too speaker. This is when i twigged that being on the floor was probably not the best place for them. Guest Garfy
rear surrounds should be positioned approx 1M above your ears, and slightly behind you if possible
Seb
You should try and align them so that the tweeters sits at ear height when you're sitting down.
