harley-jm
I'm mounting up a FMIC and seem to recall that their is an optimum gap to leave beween the FMIC and rad but cant remember what it is? Did a search without luck. HELP!! cheers Paul
csa
as close as possible is my guess. To avoid any air slipping out the sides, top and bottom. but let's hear the experts as well...
paul mac
you do want a low pressure area behind the intercooler but i do not think there would be an optimum distance to promote this, to close and the main radiator would radiate heat to the intercooler (bad), the main thing is to make sure you seal the gap between the front bumper and the intercooler and the gap between the intercooler and the radiator, if you dont think this is important just have a look at the pains Mr T takes to seal the stock intercooler and main engine radiator

Latent heat from one heating the air that's supposed to exchange over the other isn't good. I'd say a 10-20cm gap is what you're after in this compromised setup, and as has been said you need to make sure the air that enters the mouth of the engine bay has no way to escape except through the intercooler and then through the radiator.
