Benyon Posted December 9, 2008 Share Posted December 9, 2008 Ive had this same damn problem for ages and I have posted on many threads like this, Im wondering if its worth taking it to toyota they have got to find it otherwise they get a slap in the face for producing cars with this ghost knocking in boot's of supra's. I have been told the prices are sky high thou and alot of the mechanics look younger than me im 23. There is fair few people on here with this same problem if you search back. michel lane Posted December 10, 2008 Share Posted December 10, 2008 i think you may find it to be the boot lid knocking rather then the suspension .The rubber mounts wear and become hard. put some sponge with the rubber joints are and close the lid , drive it and see what you think. I've had the car to Toyota (normally a no-no, since they rarely see Supras anymore and therefore lack exprience), thinking they would be able to retorque everything. No luck. Of cause the car was not making the noise when it was with them the first time. Later on it was getting worse and they found it to be a worn upper suspension arm up front that was worn. I havent gotten it changed yet, but oiling the bushes in that helped a lot. I also have some knocking (a very metallic "clonck") in the back, but this only happens in the wet. Very weird. I suspect it to be related to the stabilizer bar since it is definatly more common in turns and when the weights shifts than when the suspension is working at bumps. Maybe this is what you guys are experiencing? I could see a garage not checking the stabilizer bar and its mounts/bushings. My plan is to work sytematic by applying oil to one part a time and therby hopefully figuring out whats making the sound. I will also try to put the car on stands and use my jack to raise/lower the wheel to see if I can "persuade" anything. Maybe some of you could try the same and report back? It is definately not the rubber stoppers from the boot lid. I have changed mine as well as that sound is very different and clearly from inside the car. by1 Posted December 10, 2008 Share Posted December 10, 2008 same problem on my uk supra, already had front shocks replaced as they were leaking and lower rear wishbone replace, but still knocking specially over long bumps. Chewie Posted December 10, 2008 Share Posted December 10, 2008 I've had this one for the last few years. Strangely only happens when on full lock and while reversing out of say a parking slot. Garage checked it out. Nothing amiss. Nothings fallen off and it drives beautifully so I stopped getting stressed out about it. I guess the Supra is getting old and it's just one of those things. There is one theory and it's to do with the large tyre width. When turning, the tyre's inside edge moves less than the outside edge. bodilx6 Posted December 11, 2008 Share Posted December 11, 2008 i'm liking the oil 1 part at a time approach..! the knocking does become less when roads are wet, which suggests lubrication could help the issue.. I'll give it a bash this weeekend and let you know! thanks for the input! Just to add; I have had my dampers replaced (they failed) but the sound was there before and still is. So it's got nothing to do with them. Those of you who havent changed the boot rubbers, and aren't 100% on if the sound is from inside or outside the car, try to fit a sponge or some tightly packed tissues or so in between the boot and hatch rubbers. Just to make sure it isn't them. As people say, they do make a lot of noise and it is a "cloncking" noise, but not as metallic as the one I'm hearing from my backend/suspension. madwoody1 Posted December 11, 2008 Share Posted December 11, 2008 I have the same sort of noise (i think) coming from the near side rear of my car, I have changed the diff (it sounded like to much backlash in the diff) good thing really as there was some damage to the teeth, but that has just made the rear end a little quieter and i still have the clonking sound just clearer now. I have already changed the boot rubbers about 2 years ago, but that is not the same noise as i'm getting, Have changed the rear track control arm (bush was worn) checked the top strut mount for play now starting to get a little p***** off with the noise anyone have any ideas? Ali C Posted December 19, 2008 Share Posted December 19, 2008 I have the same problem and thought it was my droplinks however the mechanic told me i need 2x lower ball joints which was the last thing i wanted to hear...
