Fisker Karma

Eco car manufacturer Fisker has released more details of the Karma, its new hybrid model due for release to the first customers some time in 2010. And it’s a bit of a stunner.

Fisker state that the car will provide customers with up to 50 miles a day of emission-free motoring if they charge the car every night at home, meaning that it’s conceivable that the car could run for a whole year on one tank of petrol. The technology centres on lithium-ion batteries, which will power the rear wheels. When running on petrol the car will use a 260bhp GM derived turbocharged Ecotec unit.

Performance figures are good – the top speed is 125mph and getting to 60 will take under 6 seconds. You won’t get the best out of the car until you put it into sport mode however. For more civilised and efficient driving the car defaults to “stealth” mode, which as the name suggests is quiet and somewhat sedate.

Other features include the 22” wheels, 4 luxury leather seats and a roof that is a solar panel to help charge the car.

So it'll run on one tank of petrol a year, but it needs to be charged up every night... on electricity... that is mostly generated by the burning of fossil fuels... like oil.

Yep seems eco friendly enough to me!

But electricity can be made in environmentally friendly ways (renewable energy).

Just because it's not produced using those methods a lot right now that doesn't mean in 2 years when the car is released things will be the same. After all, just take a drive through Germany or Denmark and count the wind farms.

Just stick a small wind turbine on the roof of your house, and Bob's your uncle; instant electricity to charge your car up over night. :)

Unless its not windy, that is :(

Sadly wind turbines are about as useful as farting in the bath :( Personal nuclear or fuel cell is the way forward I reckon :)
