A step back for the police state

About time.

Now we need someone to address the police force's attempts to keep information secret from the public, whether it's revealed by an MP

(you know something's dodgy when Tony Benn and Michael Howard are both opposed to it :))

or by a journalist

Good

The fact they have to keep the DNA on a database 'just incase those people recorded re-offend/or offend for the first time as the case may be' pretty much sums up the fact that their admitting they dont believe their rehabilitation process works

People say DNA records can help snare paedo's and rapists, well these people shouldnt be allowed out to offend in the first place:rolleyes:

i was listen on radio 2 earlier where they were saying that because someone had been stopped for a traffic offence and there DNA had been taken, when they put it in the data base, it pulled up a match from her cousin that had commited 16 rapes and an attempted murder, he was then pulled in and is now serving a sentence, surely it has to be a good thing.

Personally i think everyone's DNA should be taken, then in the event of a crime been committed, be it murder, rape or pedophilia it can be matched straight away to a certain few (forget how many are a rough match) then through witnesses and alibi's negate the innocent.

Dont you think theres something wrong there?

How in this day and age can one person get away with 16 Rapes?? What sentence did this guy get and why isnt he in the national Newspapers being shamed

I would further ask the question why isnt this guy being stoned to death?

Perhaps we can let the DVLA run the database - they never lose anything / sell it to the highest bidder / make a mistake, do they? Or maybe the NHS or home office or possibly inland revenue should manage it. No..no, i've got it - we'll contract it out to a private company - like Capita:taped:.

You might just be able to make a good case in theory for this, but in practice it will be another badly managed and abused instrument of a nanny state with really quite serious communist leanings - much like anti terror legislation.

Great News...

For one time at least I agree with the Europeans over our own lawmakers.

I'm sure that if (most) of the current Government and the police had had thier way, we would all have our DNA taken at birth and a bar code tattooed onto our neck.

Why not take it a step more and have us all clock in and out of our homes, or they could just put up even more cameras.

Obviously it would make sense to limit all cars to only go the maximum speed limit and jail anybody to tried to alter this.

etc............

I'm sure somebody will come up with the old line "if you innocent, you won't mind all of this" but IMO liberty comes along with a slight acceptable risk - which I'm willing to take.

you will soon be going to jail for pissing on the street. This country is invading people's privacy..Soon there won't be any point having a fast car in the UK for sure.

It Was from 15 years previous that he committed the offences, it was when his cousin was stopped and she provided a DNA sample that they got the link and was arrested. In my eyes that has to be a good thing, one less rapist on the street, but hey if you want them there then thats your choice, and i wont argue that, everyone is entitled to there own opinion, mine is that there is a DNA data base to protect the innocent, if somebody raped my wife and was caught through a DNA database rather than there not been one and allowing them to go on and do it again to maybe your Wife/GF/Daughter, then surely it has to be a good thing, but if your happy for it to happen then thats fine.

No-one here is objecting to the ends the police can achieve with the technology, it's the means that's worrying people. Of course we don't want rapists and murders going unpunished, but to believe that a major, unwarranted invasion of privacy is acceptable because "it's for our own good" is very naive.

So if they cant do it through DNA which is proven to work, which method would you suggest they use? If the time frame to catch a criminal is reduced because his DNA is logged in a database, then surely that has to be a good move, Run the specimen, match it then pull in the individual, if they have no record of this person, the time frame taken to build a picture allows him to carry on acting.

Take for instance the prostitute murders in Ipswich, how many died because they did not know who the guy was? if they had taken his DNA from the first victim, matched it from the Database, he would of been arrested probably before he murdered again.

Well, everything else the police do to catch criminals.

how many died because they did not know who the guy was?

Actually they caught him because of a DNA sample taken when he was found guilty of theft.......

In 2001, Wright worked as a barman at the Brook Hotel in Felixstowe before being sacked for stealing hundreds of pounds from the till, for which he was ordered to carry out 100 hours community service.

It was a DNA sample taken at the time of that conviction which led to police matching samples taken from the dead women.

He was put under surveillance by police before being arrested on 19 December and charged two days later.

(from the BBC).

In other words the system of storing the DNA of convicted criminals worked perfectly. You've picked a bad example there. ;)

Unfortunately very close to the truth. EDS would have got the IT contract (as they almost always do).

NHS, DVLA, Air Traffic Control and many other examples of their handiwork still live on unfortunately...

Hurrah hurrah :)

I like the way SEVENTEEN judges unanimously decided it was a completely unfair and worrying situation, and our bunch of twunts in charge were "disappointed" and "will carefully consider the ruling". Excuse me, how much careful consideration does it take to realise you've just been firmly smacked down and told to stop treating proven innocent people like criminals? Oh, the law stays in place until they've finished 'considering', now how many years will that take?

Still, score a big one for the ordinary Joe, and a smack in the face for Jacqui "Citizen" Smith. Result.
