Fellas, what do you think of the R32 Golf?

Production has now expired and there are only a few new ones left in the UK before stocks run out this month - the new Golf Mk6 then goes on sale in January but the new model line will not have anything like the R32 in terms of its speed and spec.

The price list with all of the kit was circa £26K but we can get one at our local VW dealer for £19995 OTR:)

Worth buying or not? This is for the missus as a daily commuter (50 miles/day) and the 4WD would certainly come in handy for where we live.

It's either this or the Octavia VRS 2.0 Turbo petrol but she has one already and fancies a change.

I nearly bought one earlier in the year, very nice cars with a quality feel but the price tag (even now) is too high for "warm" performance in a car that you see all over the place. Road tax is expensive, fuel economy isn't great and the car isn't much quicker than a GTi, the handling isn't amazing either, it's OK, just not £25k OK.

I'd have a used one at the £15k (or less) they are going for at the moment but I'd never buy new, the S3 seemed to tick all the same boxes and usually came out as the winner in mag tests against the R32.

The main mistake VW made was with the front end, they gave the R32 a different look to other Golfs but in doing so made it look like all the generic budget cars in their stable, if I'm buying the flagship sports model I don't want it to look like 1.6 Touran.

Golf GTi or better still a Scirocco if you must go VW, you won't get the same noise but you'll get similar performance for less outlay.

I much prefer the mk4 model I was actually going to buy one instead of the Supra. I wouldn't buy a mk5 new as they're depreciating pretty fast right now. I'd buy the mk4 as you can get a nice example for ~10k and they have a bit more character to them but i'm not sure if your mrs will be interested in that?

As Michael said, if you want a newer car, the S3 seems to pretty much clear up in the hot hatch stakes plus will be better on fuel and tax. You'll just be missing that lovely V6 noise :)

Newsflash
/vbb/images/smilies/bbcode_grin.gif

It seems the Skoda Octavia Range is now being sold in December 'only' without the tax burden, meaning a fully loaded VRS 2.0 Turbo is now only £15000 OTR or £15800 with metallic paint, parking sensors and a protection kit (i.e. mats, boot liner and headlight protectors).

I think the R32 has just lost its appeal.:innocent:

Many thanks for the input guys - it was a big help when I needed it most:thumbs:

I loved the Octavia L&K I had for a while, it was only the TD but so well put together, lovely to drive, masses of space, all it needed was the looks and handling of the vRS IMO.

Get a silver one and play unmarked police car, everyone will move out of your way :)

The new Black VRS arrives on the 22nd Dec - just in time for my wifes Xmas box:D. I hope she doesn't want any other pressies though?

The VRS' are nice cars Michael and I don't think we could have gone wrong at that price. It seems SAAB is also doing the same offer as per the advert in the Telegraph yesterday (i.e. VAT off the range until 31st Dec).
