Where's the grit?

Oh well, my plan to be a good neighbour has been ruined

I live on a long cul-de-sac with a steep hill at the end nearest the main road, there must be about 100 houses on it in total but only one way in and out... which is an ice rink at present.

Someone crashed on there this morning and blocked the road off, it was just sheet ice but because it's not a main road the gritter doesn't visit. I decided to be the gritter tonight...

I wrapped up in a warm coat, bucket and small shovel in hand ready for a long walk down the slippy hill to get grit to do the road and then bring some up to do the top of the hill too, my plan being that cars would help distribute the grit along the full length and in the morning it wouldn't be so bad. First of all the 3 previously spaced out grit bins had moved, all of them within 10m of each other near the bottom of the hill... secondly all 3 were empty apart from a couple of empty cans.

Now the road hasn't been gritted, the path hasn't been gritted... so who has taken all the grit and what are they doing with it? I tried to be decent but it wasn't to be, pretty frustrating really. I won't be going to heaven just yet.

I've emailed the council asking for more grit but I suspect the salty thieves will return again if they fill them up - probably selling it for £2 a bag down the road.

So does anyone have any grit I can borrow? I cant work from home tomorrow, I have things to do.

your in the wrong county mate, the grits spread over half of Lancashire, they grit eveything round hear at the drop of a hat, i have an old Mitsubishi Galant that i use for work and yesterday i saw the gritter coming the other way and as it pepered the front, bonnet and both drivers side doors of the old bus in a hale of rock salt (passenger side windscreen wiper now has a chunk out of it due to a lump getting stuck under the blade :complain:), i actually smiled to myself thinking of my pride and joy all tucked up cosy in its heated garage blisfully ignorant of this assault to its paint work, if i had my way i would send every b*****d last gritter your way with pleasure :protest:

If people are thieving the grit from the bins why not just take the damn bin it comes in too? I bet they're not bolted down.

Perhaps you have someone in your cul-de-sac that likes the sideways drifting challenge in their daily commute in the winter? Any scooby/200SXs or drift car owners in your area? :p

A nice gesture I do admit though. Ashame it would be thankless anyway.

Is it true that if you try to de-ice a bit of public property and someone slips over you can be sued for not doing the job properly, but if you knowingly leave it slippery you cannot?

I usually to put grit on my dive and the (public) path at the end of it to stop my car sliding out into the road.

I wouldn't put it past some of the piky scum or the PC do gooders in this country to lock you up for leaving a little ice after trying to do some good.

We need a little common sense knocking into this country.. If you fall over in the play ground, you're a gimp. It's not an invitation to sue the school.

..or Gary Gritter.

Do you think he'll admit to that? :D

There was plenty thrown all over our MG tonight. I'll scrape it up and post you some.

I do really hate that! If I see the tell tale yellow flashing lights on the road ahead, when I'm driving, I try to 'hide' somewhere until its passed. ;)

Still no grit :(

Send the council another email (include your last) asking which department you should write to when you have an accident due to skidding on ice despite having asked for grit several days ago. Send them a link to a weather forecast, if you're expecting sub zero temperatures anytime soon. I bet they get a move on then. ;)

The silly thing is they have been out and replaced the traffic bollard that someone took out when it was icy last time...

It must be bollard-replacing week, as we had the same thing happen here: a bollard up the road from me was taken out last year and only replaced last week.
