how do they mate a supra gearbox to a 3sgte

Hi guys,

Ive got a question. How can you mate the supra gearbox to a 3sgte engine.

Im from the mr2 imoc forum and Im hoping to switch to get a supra soon and wanted to put my 3sgte engine in the supra. I just wanted to know if anyone knew how they mated the supra box to the 3sgte engine.

I was going to sell up and get a tt supra but Ive got a forged 3sgte engine which would go to waste and I like to do things differently  So I have decided to strip the mr2 and put the 3sgte engine in the supra should be fun just need to figure out how the gearbox is connected.

Thanks

Regards,

Sanchi

I was looking around for alternatives and on the lexus altezza 3sge engine there is a 6 speed manual gearbox do you think that may work or would the ratios be tooo out..

Right.. I see... So who would I be able to contact on here (as Im new to the supra world) regarding a possible custom bell housing to fit a 3sgte engine.

Also is the 6 speed n/a the same as the 6 speed tt? are they both getrag boxes?

depends on the power your 3sgte is putting out, you may get way with a w58 5 speed, or even the r154 5 speed. There are w58 to 3s adapters around as they are common in kit cars, also the Ford t56 (?) which is also mated to the 3s in kit cars...The JTTC supras ran hollinger or OS Giken boxes IIRC.

Some info on whats needed for RWD configuration

There are lots of cars running 3sgte's in RWD with different combo's including the box from a v8 rover..check out http://www.toymods.net

I can sort out a custom bellhousing, but the stock Getrag doesn't use a removable bell, so a different box may be more readily adaptable. Borg Warner T5 with dog box internals maybe? Whatever you do will be expensive, probably very expensive. A full weight MKIV with a 3SGTE in it will be horrible, look at the weights of the race cars, VAST difference. Unless you get the package under 1200 Kgs and even then want a revvy race track machine, I think it's a backward step.

Hi Sanj

Ryan

Hey Ryan, Im already thinking of a new project mate! Lets see how this goes!

Hi Sanj, thought you would try to make best use of that engine I built for you :D

Im putting a 2jz in my mr2  im sure I can help you put that 3s in the supra, give me a call to catch up.

James

Hey James!

Im going to give you a call to see what we can do mate! Hopefully I'll be able to pull this off!

Thanks for the responses guys I think the w58 adaptor sounds good for the meantime until I can afford a box that is better.

The car will go on a crash diet and will try to make it as light as possible.

How can I tell the difference between the w58 boxes and the r154 boxes as I was thinking of buying a 5 speed n/a and using the box from that.

I'm not sure if I agree to be honest Chris. I've been thinking about the weight distribution over the weekend with regards to a couple of projects people have got on the go.

Ideally you want approximately 40-ish% front weight balance, which I just don't think is achievable with the 2JZ. It just weigh's too much.

As people junk stuff out to drive down the total weight of the car (a fair percentage from the rear) if anything I should think it will exasperate the problem. I guess it would be possible to strip the car until it's a total featherweight and then start to add tungsten ballast to the bottom of the car to get the distribution back, but then you'll be driving the overall weight back up....

I think fitting a 3SGTE as far rearwards as possible would be a good step. The only problem I really see is that you're going to want about 500bhp and a nice healthy torque curve to go with it, but I don't know if the 3SGTE is going to reliably produce that, and lets be honest, I doubt many people on here are going to have the sort of cash to be rebuilding an engine two or three times a season.

in my opinion a v8 sorts this problem, 1uz must be lighter than a cast iron 2J and is only 4 cylinders long, it can sitting further back and lower than a 2j and the torque from it would kill a 3S so for me a 3s would be a bad option, ok for a racecar thats always having its tits revved off but for a road car its a bit pointless, the power delivery of a 2j is bad enough when its wet but a 3sgte running huge boost at high rpm and absolutely no torque below 2-2.5k is going to be more of a hinderence, unless the OP is planning on having it as a track car or something.

hey guys its going to be for a road car/weekend track car. Its still just a thought at the moment still looking the advantages and disadvantages I would like to really like to do it but need more research! :)

aaahhh... the w58 is the n/a box... would the ratios be ok for the 3sgte and would it be strong enough? or is it best to go with something like the r154?

also just wanted to know when using the supra box can I use my 3sgte clutch and flywheel or do I have to use the 3sgte flywheel but supra clutch? or does it not matter what clutch I use?

Hi Sanchi!

Email Trial Tuning in Japan, they have an English speaking sales rep (American or English I think) who is very helpful. Trial has a 3SGTE engined Supra with I believe the Getrag V160/V161 gearbox in it. He might be able to point you out to the right direction as to how Trial Tuning did theirs.

HTH!

Piece of cake, you want a 2S bellhousing. You can buy these from Toyota Directly (assuming they still have one lingering around the belgian warehouse somewhere).

Using the 2S bellhousing you can mate a W58 straight onto a 3S. You will then need Altezza RS200 Engine mounts which you can also buy straight from Toyota.

Best place for this kinda conversion is Toymods as the aussies love doing RWD 3SGTE conversions :)
