mathew
just been to currys to look at tv's and got chatting to the assisstant about all this 1080 malarky. she explained what it was all about as i was stood there looking at two samsung tvs, one with the 1080 and one with 780 iirc, and really couldnt tell the difference apart from the price. if anything the 780 version had a crisper brighter picture. il be using the tv for tv programmes and gaming. not really a big dvd watcher though. all my life my parents have had the lower end tvs so even the cheapest new tv picture will impress me. so in short do you think its worth me spending the extra (approx £400) for the 1080 model? ideally looking for 1080 owner's views. one more thing aswell is that is the weight of tv that is specified the actuall weight or do they include a safety margine for lifting etc? as ive got a stand that will take approx 30kg but the tv i want is stated as being 37kg. Ian W
There's also different types of 1080 mate. Think it's a 1080p and a 1080i or something like that...
Wez
For starters dont use the Currys setups to judge picture quality, they are normally shocking. If you are gaming then it depends on the console, the Wii is only 480 but the PS3 and Xbox do full 1080 HD. Most sets will rescale, for example I use a PS3 at 1080 over component on an old non HD panasonic plasma, it looks ok but on a true HD set it would look quite alot better. bolarbag
I went for a 1080p Philips with Ambilight aswell as a little pioneer:innocent: and think its the dogs! I hadnt even seen the 720variation until yesterday in Argos, it looked rubbish tbh But that could be to do with the way they had set it up in the shop who knows There are loads of whats and why's over on avforums.com(lots of bedtime reading), theres rules about how close you sit to the tele e.t.c, It depends on your sources, and what they display at, but tbh the films look so good on the new tele's I can see myself becoming a Blue Ray snob! monsween
There's also different types of 1080 mate. Think it's a 1080p and a 1080i or something like that... What he said You also get different contrast ratio's which drastically affect the picture quality. The main problem with the contrast ratio is that there is no industry standard. So i 30,000:1 and 20,000:1 could be the same quality from different manufacturers. Where as samsung 30,000:1 is better quaility than a samsung 20,000:1. Its all a bit of a pickle lol What size were you thinking? There is a general rule that i have found from looking online. This is that TV's 0-42" = LCD TV's >42" = Plasma

mathew
it was a 50inch samsung plasma. the picture quality on it looked brilliant from all angles and that was on the 780. i was just finding it hard to imagine how the picture quality (on the 1080) could be even better than that. i guess its a case of you wont miss something youve never had. RiceRocket
It's actually 720p isn't it (not 780). My personal summary on HD preferences is this: 720p - For HD broadcast of fast-moving sport, maybe gaming (not into it myself so don't really know) 1080i - For HD broadcast of ordinary tv such as documentaries, big shows like Prison Break, Heroes etc 1080p - For Blu-Ray dvds, maybe gaming (as above in 720)

Seb
the Wii is only 780 Actually the Wii is only 480. 720p is considered to be better for watching non-HD things such as TV, but 1080p comes into its own on a bigger TV. It's worth it now seeing as 1080p prices have fallen, it's more commonplace and it's future-proofing. When you do get your telly, you want the settings roughly like this for the most natural image: Brightness 45% Contrast 65% Colour 50%
mathew
when you say the 1080 are future proof are you implying that the 720 tv will come into difficulty in the future?

Carl
For me the Panasonic Plasmas and if you can stretch to it Pioneers generally lead the way. I second that. I am bias as i am on my second Panasonic Plasma now but to be honest, for the money there is no better plasma out there. Only the pioneer comes close and is much dearer. If you intend to eventually buy BluRay player then I would recommend stretching to the 1080p version as this will future proof your buy. I used to think there was little difference between 720p plasma & 1080p plasma untill i bought my new one and believe me it was liking going from DVD to HD again with regards to HD material being even crisper and more vibrant in colours. If you intend to plug pc's or game consoles into it then again higher resolution will make text etc much clearer to read. i found on the 720p units writing was much harder to read. mathew
ive decided on the 50inch samsung 720. £660 delivered from dixons with a few voucher codes.
Tricky-Ricky
progressive and interlaced 1080p is better than 1080i In theory, but i bet you won't be able to tell the difference in a blind test, also PS3 will do both 1080- 720I/P, dependant on the source. Jake
Unless you watch anything in HD, or plan to, there's ZERO point in having 1080i or 1080p. I have a 37" 1080p LCD (JVC) and quite honestly it's crap at non-HD. Regular TV and Sky are poor. It looks good on 1080i through the XBox360 but for everything else it's not good. On the other hand, I have a 1080p Panasonic 50" plasma in the computer room/dining room which has a SkyHD box (SkyHD is only 1080i though) and the picture is really very good. If I were you I'd not get a Samsung though. I'd have a good look at the 720p range of Panasonics - I think they are the PX model codes. Apparently they are very good quality for the money, according to the guys that know about these things on AVFourms and PH.
ilicos
The only thing I will say about the Samsungs is that their sound quality is not that great unless you have surround. This is what everyone i know who has one says. I personally have the Panasonic 1080p and think that compared to all my friends other brands it knocks spots off them!!! I've look around and just couldn't justify the extra cost over the 720. Very little stuff that I have would make full use of 1080 especially given that my screen is only 40"

Jake
I find sony give better picture then the rest or may be just me I have the entry level 46" 1080P LCD from SonyThat'll be because 46" is way too big for an LCD. Generally, anything over over 36" is better on a plasma screen. (Unless very good LCD compared to poor plasma) i can tell the difference playing call of duty 4 on the PS3 1080i is poo and 720p is much better Higher resolutions look worse? Your TV sucks then.
