what a waste of taxpayers cash Social workers are

Because two high profile cases have made it into the news recently? How about the thousands of cases that they get right? The severely disabled people that they help live a good life? The children who are removed from harm?

Oh I forgot, they're paid through tax money so that makes them fair play. ;)

For the many thousands that take up Social Working solely to help people there are thousands more that take it up as a job and see it just as that,

So there are only 2cases in recent times to appear in the media spotlight? That made me laugh

Edit: Not taking away from the many 'Social Workers' that do the job for the sole reason of helping people - their a better person than me I'll say, its a hard complex job, low paid and high risk, I would consider such a job in certain areas, if only the salary was there, but the main problem is the generalisation of what a social worker can do, every case is different and I personally dont feel I would be making a difference to given the tools and powers that they have - as a prime highlighted example Baby P, although I know of many others

There's plenty of professions where a cockup can cause people to be hurt or killed: How about a firefighter, doctor or nurse or a soldier?

Blimey - a decent engineering or architectural cock up can wipe out several hundred people in one fell swoop if you really play your cards wrong.

Lets be fair, if a social worker effs up, a child dies. If a desk jockey effs up then that paperwork doesn't get the accountants on time, nobody dies and no one is injured or scarred.

Not true. There are plenty of pen pushers who can cause death or injury by making a mistake in figures or writing eg (rubbish example I know) does the bullet-proof vest manufacturer ask for 2mm or 2cm thickness? Get a figure or a number wrong... it's easily done

It's like when a child gets bitten / killed by a "savage" dog, all of a sudden children everywhere are getting attacked. Then it goes quiet and the media move on to something else, the dogs keep biting though.

Don't kid yourselves, stuff like this is probably happening every day and has been for a long time, it's just the current media favourite so you are getting to hear about it.

You're right, that's a really rubbish example.

I should think the bulletproof vest manufacturer would have various checks and codes for different models and specifications though this did happen with a satellite when the Europeans measured in metric, the Yanks in imperial and built half of it each.

When a train driver cocks up it doesn't take long for people (including his employers) to hang him out to dry.

If you choose a profession where there is a high chance of somebody being abused, raped, maimed, paralysed, burnt or dying if you cock things up then you have to be prepared for people, regardless of being armchair experts or genuine vocational experts to start pointing fingers in your direction. This goes for many occupations but social work is at the sharp end of this blame and shame culture due to the nature of the work & it's victims.

Unfortunately that is probably true. Also like Knife crime, it doesn't just shoot up and then drop. It's just the level of coverage makes it appear that way.

You've gotta love the justice system:

Eh?

I can't imagine it'll be an easy 19 years, cons read the papers and watch the news, I would guess this bloke will be in for a very hard time in prison, but otherwise yes, the justice system is screwed, the bloke should be locked up for the rest of his days.

How was anyone to know this was going on?

I mean abuse is quite easy to hide if the girls were too scared to come forward.

No one knows the full facts but it is shocking all the same. I'm completely shocked that he would want anything to do with the children that he'd fathered by such horrible means.

It’s been a long day, I really don’t understand what you’re saying there.

I was going to say that. however, they must have been locked away from the outside world or im sure teachers or friends would have noticed some injuries surely:blink: And if they were locked up somebody must have noticed them "disappear." Unless he moved with them and had them locked inside all day and night.

AGREED!

Yeah, because kids walk around with big signs around their necks say 'I'm abused'....

There are many ways that they hide injuries or explain them away, that is the sad truth of it all. The abusers put such fear into them that they will do WHATEVER it takes to protect the secret. The biggest issue for most who have been abused is that they blame themselves and they wouldn't want to share the information because they are 'worthless'.

In the link on 1st post, I found this part particularly sad.

Going on the quote it showed the caring side of it all. :(

It emerged that in 1998 one daughter rang Childline, a charity to help abused kids, and asked for assurances about being able to keep her children if she came forward. When Childline could not make that guarantee, the daughter did nothing more to raise her plight.

And on the news tonight it stated tha the brother had contacted the police regarding incest. And also that social services and teachers had noticed markings that did not look accidental as far back as the late 1970's:( Well done to those guys for acting on what they were told or saw:rolleyes:
