Got a letter this morning :-

"Dear customer, your direct debit will be going up as of 1/1/2009 to £91 a month"

Now you might think I live in some 6 bed residence but nope, its a 2 bed terraced. Over a grand a year is an outrage, especially as I only started using the heating again in october!!

Any other members had a shock recently

If you do ring them, make sure you have your meter reading with you so you can tell them and they can work out the cheapest price you're able to get.

You can ask them to refund any amount of credit currently on your account as well, but remember you pay the same every month of the year but spend more in the winter - if you clear out your account credit now you'll have to top it up again next year!

I'm gathering you are saying people should complain, reminds me very much of the fuel strikes and such. Not enough momentum to do anything. Consider a different fuel source if you feel so strongly.

British Gas are without doubt the worst company I have ever had dealings with and this was before the obscene price hikes and proiteering. I'd recommend moving company, I'm with Eon now (was powergen when I moved) it's like night and day compared to British Gas's service.

Me too. Also Eon offer price protection for about 25p extra per month.

The systems are down, some offices are back up and running though (there are 5 throughout Britain).

More than likely your Direct Debit has went up for a reason. If you want PM me your details and I will have a look for you (if you read this before contacting them), even if you have spoken to them and not satisfied give me a shout.

I got a letter the other morning, because the initial direct debt set up has not covered the amount we used, ie we owe £201 they have recalculated our direct debt to adjust this and recoup the £201 owed, giving a price increase of.........................................

I was in debt by 6 pounds, with bills based on estimates from May this year. I was paying 27 a month so to 91 is over 300% increase. The computers locked up when I called last so Im getting a call back at 4 for a meter reading based bill and sort out.

James thanks very much for that, Ill pm you in a bit.
