Removing a stuck lifter from the head (bent valve)

ok guys

Well this isnt actually 2j specific (not, its not my 2jz engine luckily!)....so mods please move this if there is a better place.

Basically, its a VW t4 van engine, turbo diesel job.

Basically, the timing has slipped (long story but common problem on this engine as the timing belt cog on the crank can damage the woodruff key and slip if the bolts not been torqued right in the past *not me!* = bent valves)

ok, basically pistons and valves have met.

2 pistons have only a valve shaped clean patch

1 piston has a valve imprint about 1mm deep

the other piston is fine.

it is clear that one valve is bent (at least) and the hydraulic lifter for said valve is well and truly wedged at the bottom of its travel.

Has anyone got any ideas on getting the lifter out? Im thinking Im going to have to drill a hole in it to try and get something in and hook/pull it out...

But all suggestions appreciated :)

if its shims and bucket you should be able to lift out the shim with a magnet and then see if you can get some pliers on the end of the bucket. check then valve guides also as they tend to crack.

Theres no shims mate.

But the bucket is basically completely stuck in the channel it sits in in the head, and I cant get the ******* thing out for love nor money! Meaning I cant use my valve spring compressor and remove the bent valve and spring etc (if indeed the bent valve will come out).

Ive tried everything but welding a nut on to it (in a vertical position) and using that to get some pull upwards with. Unfortunately my cousin has my welder ATM and lives in York so Im trying to manage without doing that.

Ive tried drilling it and b*gger me, its hard as hell. So Im just trying to dig out some better drill bits and have another go

Beat the valve as straight as you can with a small hammer on the head. Then, with the cam out, tap the valve back up the remains of the guide until it's on its seat. Hopefully the follower will be in a none carbonised part of its guide by then, and will be free to remove with the suction cup of a cheap valve lapping tool. Next step is grind the valve head off and clean up the remains of the stem until it's burr free and parallel. Tap that right up the guide until the lifter pops out.
