Dyer864
Thats wot i thought ,when battery goes flat all the lights usually dim and go out when cranking, but the lights are bright , poss. check the starter i think ! cheers guys
Konrad
Check and clean battery terminals and check battery clamps for cracks before you will start putting starter to pieces
botachi
if the starter motor won't even crank over but all other electrical functions work, then its not the battery. Check the fuse for the starter motor, check the wires leading to and from starter, and CHECK THE KEYHOLE coz mine had that problem, due to wear and tear, one of the wires there broke off CHEERS! plus1
Buy a multi-meter and check your battery. If it's going click, click then the solenoid is kicking in but there might not be enough juice left in the battery to turn over the starter motor. Doesn't mean that the basic electrics won't work as they draw a lot less current.
Paul372
battery thats what happened to mine same thing just jump start with jump leads and take it for a spin it should charge the battery back up
stevie_b
Do these symptoms sounds familiar? -> http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=70712 The cause of my problem was the starter motor contacts. Toyota sell a kit specifically for replacing those contacts, *much* cheaper than buying a new starter motor.
Luka-P
If you're getting a click when you try to turn the car on then its the starter. You just need to whip it off and change the contacts, should be as good as new.

Stevo
Won't you just need new contacts and not a whole starter motor? See Stevie b's post above for the Toyota kit...

Dyer864
Got refurb kit, how hard is it to take off starter ? much work involved
stevie_b
There's a guide on here somewhere on how to do it. Do a search for "starter motor refurb" or similar. Depends how good you are with the spanners as to whether it's worth doing yourself. Having a hydraulic jack and decent axle stands is a must I would think. I looked into doing it myself, but decided against it after reading the guide.
