timing belt query

ive been lookin through the technical threads trying to get info on how much its gonna cost me to get my timing belt done at a toyota garage but none of the threads are recent. Has anyone got any idea how much this is gonna cost me? cheers

yeah i dont know any specialists around this neck of the woods so i thought it would be best to use toyota at least i can go back to them if there is a problem, been scammed before by small independant garage. cheers for the info

hi mate,

 

If you need a garage to change a timing belt give me a shout as I had my mechanic changing mine a number of times as we were in and out of the engine over the last few weeks.

 

He is more than capable on them now.

 

plus much cheaper than toyota.

I had mine changed recently at Toyota RRG in Macclesfield, total cost was about £335 (not including VAT) which was mostly labour as the belt was only £26! I'm sure there are many places you can get this done more cheaply

 

 

A trip about 7 miles into Shropshire would have seen you with a bill for £182 :)

but i would rather deal with a garage used to High performance cars than a kwik fit operation who would spend most of the day ragging it up and down the road and the rest on repairing the damage.

 

Isn't that stating the obvious? ;)

 

Who suggested taking it to that sort of garage then?

 

There's nothing specialist about changing the timing belt, my point was that you don't have to search high and low looking for a specialist garage to get that sort of work done. Changing the timing belt is so so simple, there're plenty of good garages out there that are more than capable.

 

Afterall we're only taking about a car, the basic mechanics of which haven't changed in decades.

End of the day you are right, its easy if you know how, and its not a space age engine. Just tends to be, as with all things, that with experience garages will be able to do it faster - and that costs you less in terms of labour.

 

Not to mention things like using heat on the crank pulley causing problems later down the line because they hadn't heard of a harmonic balancer, didn't know about the rubber in it, and end up costing more.

 

Seen it a few times, from trusted garages as well as the obvious Kwik Fit monkeys.

to be perfectly honest you would be better taking it to a lexus dealer ( if one in your area will work on it)

 

thay have the crank pully tool as standerd in the SST's where is toyota dont! and i no of some toyota dealers to struggle to undo the bolt

You're right there.

 

That's the trouble I suppose, it's not easy finding garages that you can trust.
