how can you afford a supra?

I'm old enough not to need a mortgage!

I'm young enough not to need a mortgage....;)

I don't think that the Supra is that expensive to run at all. If you are doing a lot of miles then the fuel is going to be hefty but generally they seem quite reasonable to run.

Based on what you have provided, I have put my own estimates. I have not made adjustments for your holidays and personal spending as this is suited to your quality of life.

However, some of your expenses are hugely excessive/ Over-charged.

For example:-

1. If you are paying such high Insurance then you should seriously look into changing your broker. £2100 is too much unless you have points/claims/convictions.

2. Tax? Do you mean road tax? I dont remember paying £600 a year!!

3. Health insurance- the national average for 25-35 year olds is £35 pm. Unless this is a pension plan.

4. Servicing costs- even with running 2 cars this should not be that high. I agree that there will be an initial modification cost if you decide to take that route, but unless you decide to Santa Pod it every weekend these will not be repetative.

5. Mobile phone, TV and internet- You are paying a total of £160 pm. With deals from Virgin and Sky offering TV,Internet and home phone at £50-60 per month ALL IN, and 1200 mins + 600 text for £40-45 pm from nearly all mobile phone companies, you could save yourself £60-70pm.

Based on your personal spending, if it were me i could easily knock off another £800-1100pm. And I have a good social life.

I have always been fortunate. I never earned much money but I was provided a car by a client instead of them paying me for my services when I first went self employed. I am also covered by their company insurance policy. After a couple of leased new cars, I asked for a Supra and they gave me one which they paid the finance on, for me to keep afterwards. I wrote that one off, and got the current one after that. That's all paid now so no debt, but I still have the good insurance deal (~£600/year covering me on both the J-Spec Supra TT and a new Honda Civic diesel). I don't go on any skiiing trips but we do take a few holidays to the inlaws in Spain & Turkey.

I think Charlotte hit the nail on the head that basically your outgoings are somewhat extravagant and certainly more than most regular folk here in England would have.

I earn well under the monthly figure stated in the first post.

I have a wife and one child.

I run 2 cars.

The Supra TT is my everyday car.

The wife drives a Renault scenic.

Wife only works part time.

I have a mortgage and all the normal bills and expenses that anyone has.

Apart from the mortgage we have no debts.

We don't struggle to have things we want.

A Supra isn't that expensive to run compared to any other car. Almost every bill I pay is bigger than the bill for the Supra.

you need an income of at least £3,200 per month

I did not see any donations to charity in all that extravagance. Maybe a few quid to a charity would not go amiss if you get so much out of life. Personally I favour the RNLI, the air ambulance and the Mouth and Foot painting artists as a suggestion!

That is my point. Meaning you have two cars you have to pay insurance, fuel, tax, parts, service and maintenance costs for.

I also run a 1.7Tdi Astra. The saving in fuel costs alone per year pays for my Supe insurance, tax and some fuel. Let alone reduced wear & tear on the old girl. Trouble is I do have a very expensive banana habit, therefor cancelling out any advantage. Oh well.

Me and my girlfriend are going for a weekend away in a nice hotel (England, nowhere glamorous), for £10 per night (thanks Branners!).

Peckham is lovely this time of year :D

I did not mean to. But it sure seems most ppl here are high income earners - that would explain the affordability.

Don't know if this is a good idea but what the heck.

Fuel 170

Insurances 175

Service and parts 280

Tax 50

Tel./Inet 50

HiFi/Xbox/TV 60

Clothes & Food 250

Garage 50

Flat 1.050

Entertainment 110

Mobilephone 50

Gifts/Christmas 60

Vacations 325

Health insurance 310

Gym 60

Other 150

That is £3.200 - small $#@!e add up!

I seriously do not see it possible to own a supra on minimum wage unless you live with your parents.

My figures from your list:

Fuel 100 (over 2 cars)

Insurances 100 (house, life and car)

Service and parts 20 (both cars)

Tax 30

Tel./Inet/HiFi/Xbox/TV 40

Clothes & Food (Not sure on this, she does the shopping)

Garage (part of the house)

Mortgage 300

Entertainment (Not sure what you class as this.)

Mobilephone 0

Vacations (Varies)

Health insurance 0 (NHS still seems ok)

Gym 0 (Get plenty of exercise at work and home)

This is approx as we don't live month to month. If the car needs petrol we fill it up. Christmas is once a year and we buy stuff at the time, cost varies from year to year. Same as vacations, we don't have set intervals between vacations, if we feel like going away we do. I fix my own cars. My mortgage is low because I could not afford a high one. I bought my first house when I was 18 when prices were good. I moved at the right times and now have a 200k house for £300 a month. I'd never afford stuff if I wasn't careful with what I do have.

My parents brought me up to believe it's not how much you earn, it's what you do with it that counts.

So that's how I manage to live on under half the original figure posted. If you do earn lots of money then maybe you don't have to be so careful and can pay for people to do stuff for you. Maybe you don't have to shop around for the best deals and stuff.

I'd love to have more cash, but I have enough to live on, a beautiful wife and daughter, I'm in good health, and I have a TT6 Supra. That's all I need. :D
