Tannhauser
I'm going to put my 2 pence in although I'll either be shouted down or ignored. I have a cross and crown of thorns going cheap. I don't understand why in a democracy the government are allowed to try limit peoples ability to join a political party. In my opinion the government should be looking at why people are voting and try address the issue itself. The attempt to limit people's free choice to join a party (irrespective of which party it is) appears to me more anti-democratic than the BNP (who I can't stand either). I suppose the fear is that it isn't a democratic party. Virtually all parties and governments now claim to be democratic in form, but the reality of what they do is different. There is a perception that the BNP has been connected to the NF and the suspicion that they are profoundly undemocratic. If democracy holds as a first principle the ideal that government should be chosen by the people, then you can't have a party that, if elected, may take away democracy - because then the people won't have a subsequent choice. I guess it's a paradox that the one thing you can't have in democracy is the right to choose an undemocratic system. This country is meant to be democratic and thus people should be free to be affiliated with whichever party they wish. I don't understand why the police can say they wont recruit BNP members... just because you are a member does not mean that you are racist... I think you should be allowed to be part of any affiliation, unless that affiliation is so extreme in its beliefs that it threatens the right to choose or the fabric of society. Whether the BNP fall into these categories, I'm ot sure. I think the suspicion is that despite trying hard to tone down their act, underneath it is somethinga lot more radical and less reasonable. As for the police, I agree in principle, but the given their history and the sensitivity to accusations of institutional racism (which I am sure were well-founded 25 years ago), adding any possible fuel to that fire would make their job impossible. Especially for bobbies in areas with lots of racial tension, they have to be whiter than white (so to speak).
Paul
I'm going to put my 2 pence in although I'll either be shouted down or ignored. I was watching the news last night about how the the present government and 3 main parties are concerned that more people might start voting for the BNP in the present financial climate and thus want to pass a law to prevent members of such parties holding any position of power. I agree with you, despite the same old crowd jumping to assumptions that I'm a member of the BNP () or run round brain dead hanging off their every word. I don't ever think that they will get anywhere, they have some good ideas, not racist ones, but have no real substance as a political party. Much like the Green party and Respect yet these are not hounded in the same way? I think all the people supporting these anti BNP tactics are just plain thick, on the one hand they praise everything that lets this country get walked all over and then ask for our democracy to be blown out the water with stuff like this? I'll never understand this 'racism' lark as long as I live, it seems to be a case of wanting your cake and eating it?
