Starting problems.

Hi there..

For some time now My car has been a pain in the a.. to start. Day after day it´s getting worse and the last couple of times I have been forced to jump start it.

I've have mesured the Exide battery the last 9 days to see how it's acting.

Day

1. 14,26V (cold engine running)

2. 12,02V

3. 10,00V

4. 9,81V

5. 8,80V

6. 9,45V

7. 9,25V

8. 8,04V

9. 6,84V

Hopefully I only need a new battery and not a complete check of the electrics?

I have searched the web and My repair books, but can't find any info on a stock battery!

Regards

Steffen

Can you describe the symptoms a bit more? In what way is it a pain in the @rse to start? Does the engine crank over at all? Does it crank over sluggishly then fail? Is it always troublesome, or just sometimes?

The voltages do seem quite low for a car battery. The first reading is with the engine running, and I presume the other readings are with the engine and all auxiliaries off. Am I correct?

Do you have another battery which you can try in the place of your one? This would enable you to tell if its the battery or another part of your starting circuit (for example, starter motor contacts). I don't think it would need to be one for a supra, as long as its known to be in good condition with plenty of cold crank amps at its disposal.

Hi there..

Let's see.. Jump started the Sup yesterday with our Corolla. Engine cranks fine aswell as the starter, so no problems there. Took the Sup out for a short spin (45min.), engine sounds fine.

Then today I tried to start the car. All it does is click click click fast from the starter and nothing else.

Sorry, I don't have a battery I can try with. Will have to buy a new.

First reading is with cold engine running. All others is with engine shut off.

I agree with Axle. If it jump starts reliably, then it must be the battery that's at fault. I think batteries these are non-servicable items. If it's not performing well, all you can do is replace it.

One other possibility: could there be anything that's draining the charge from the battery when the car's not in use? The only way I know of testing for that is to use an ammeter without the alarm armed (so that the drain should be zero amps).

This was pretty much happeneing to me when i got the soop i bought a new battery and it worked well. But it was weird one day i drove it and the next day it started after that it would not start without a jump and you could drive it for a hour and when you turn it off then battery could be dead. Hopefully its only the battery
