Recommended Posts

OK, I thought I'd kick off a discussion about albums that we liked in 2008;

Here are mine :)

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

We Are Scientists - Brain Thrust Mastery

Kings of Leon - Only By The Night

Pete & The Pirates - Little Death

Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles

Mystery Jets - Twenty One

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs

The Breeders - Mountain Battles

What did you play?

btw, no need to do a link for each one... I'm just a bit bored.. can you tell?

Interested that you liked Mountain Battles, as I think the album is particularly weak.

That said, it turned out it was only the production that was poor, tho - we went to see them in Camden in April (unfortunately didn't get to have dinner with them beforehand like we did at the last gig ;) ), and the songs had a lot more energy performed live than came across on the recorded versions - maybe I just don't have the ear for it......

Overall, I don't think 2008 has been a particularly great year for new music. But maybe that says more about me than about the music scene! :p Maybe I'm finally getting old! :D

aww come on Mr Snooze.. it's been a great year..! a tad heavy on the eighties revival things I'll give you, but lots going on and lots of different sounds.

I had the same feeling on the first couple of listens to Mountain Battles.. but I did warm to it quicker that I did Title TK. I think MB is the 'art' album for them. It feels a bit closer to Pod than anything else they've done. Pod is one of the greatest albums of all time, for me. That said, Kim could sing the phone book and I'd be happy.

You had dinner with Kim!? :omg: come on, I need the full story now.. she's a bit of a hero of mine :)

Pod is a great album - true (although Last Splash tends to be the one that I pull out most often).

Yeah - dinner with the Breeders (of sorts!) - funny story that! :D

Was at their previous visit to the UK (think it was 2005) - they were playing at Blackheath Halls - a local venue normally reserved for chamber music and choir groups by the looks of it.

We got their early, so we popped into a nearby pizza place, and got directed to the only remaining empty table in one corner of the restaurant.

Not long after we sat down, a strange french girl wandered over to our table and asked to join us - but the conversation was almost impossible (she had very poor english and us very poor french), so we weren't really sure what she was going on about when she started asking us if we were going to the gig, if we knew the band and how we'd managed to book that table.......

It was only after we'd started eating, and a few minutes after she'd given up trying to make us understand what she meant and had left in frustration that we actually realised what she'd been going on about.

At the very next table were the band!!! I'd been sat no more than 3 feet away from Kelley, on the same bench the whole bl**dy time - as they'd been sat there quietly, we'd been too distracted by our new, funny, foreign friend to even notice!

They were really friendly, and had a quick chat before they had to head off to get ready - top gig it was too!

Excellent story mate! My mate lives round the corner from that place. I actually visited him the weekend prior to the gig.. and then pleaded with him to be around the following weekend so I could kip at his place and see them... but he went on holiday instead.. git!

I saw them at Reading Fest way back when, and they were awesome. They're curating All Tomorrows Parties next year :)

Metallica - Death Magnetic :)

I did wonder how long it would take before someone mentioned this one :D

I'm so slack I haven't even listened to it yet... I just think of Frantic whenever I hear them. I prefer their reality TV stuff these days :p

Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone is probably the best thing I've heard this year

Are they good now? I used to like them, then thought they went a bit cr@ppy so stopped listening to them but if there good again then I might have to invest in that album.
