Mate of mine considering buying a manual tt supra mk 3.

Anybody have advice on what tends to go wrong with them ?

Are they more/less reliable than the mkiv ?

Value for money ? (He's looking at one i believe in the region of 2000-2500 sterling)

Is there different models in them that are better than others?

Is there a decent selection of aftermarket parts available etc ?

Wasn't it just a case of wrong factory head screws torque settings?

Not far off there. Combination of that as well as heat soak at the no6 cylinder against the firewall/poor EGR layout in that area and air entrapment in the cooling circuit in this area made for a very bad combination which was bound to fail. If you buy 7M series dont let it develop a BHG, just be prepared to do it. It takes about twenty hours and about three hundred quid if you do it yourself. If it overheats then it can mean a new head or at the very least a skim and that adds another £70 - £100 on the job.

If you buy one which currently has a BHG be tempted to walk away if there is water in the oil. The big ends will go within a few weeks of doing the head. Guaranteed.

Check out Mkiiisupra.net There is loads of good info there and they are very helpful.

I would go for the 2.5TT ... having owned both, I would never buy a 2.0TT again, as they are just lacking power for such a heavy chassis, and the wide body variant is an improvement over the more common narrow body 2.0TT.

I sold my 2.5TT manual a few years ago and I still miss it ... dare I say that it was built better and had more character than my VVTi ...

Luckily for me I still have a 2.5TT auto, but that's no longer being driven as its being saved for a museum ;-) Or is it that I just can't drive an auto and smile at the same time :(

Top of my list for cars to import at the moment is a grey 2.5TT manual with low miles ... never seen one yet , but maybe one will appear ... :search:
