Unmarked speed camera vans

Just thought I'd warn people in Essex/Suffolk/Cambs about the unmarked camera vans the police seem to be using at the moment. I think I got caught on Friday :(. The van I saw was a dark blue transit near Ipswich, completely unmarked. Didn't realise there was a camera sticking out the back until I was about 30 metres away. After a bit of internet research I found out they're using them in all of the above counties, probably others as well.

Found a recent news article that said they don't have to be visible but they must have a speed camera warning sign if there isn't one nearby. Unfortunately there are a couple along the road, just never normally see any cameras. There definately weren't any police about, and the mrs works for the DVLA and said its not one of theirs. I also read another forum in which someone confirmed they had been caught by a similar van a few miles away, and has since had the ticket through.

I was doing 40 in a 30. Can't complain, got caught fair and square. Shouldn't be a 30 zone though in my opinion.

If you are lucky then you might get an invite to attend a one day safety course in lieu of the points ... depends on what your actual recorded speed was ... and of course if the camera was switched on when you drove past :)

In my opinion you will see more and more of this. The country is bankrupt and the good old cash cow motorist will catch it in the wallet again and again. Our love affair with the car will always ensure there are enough motorists out there. The governments need to raise cash will ensure more and more devious methods used to catch offenders. Dont you think it strange that the government is trying harder and harder to convince us that speed is dangerous in order to justify their actions. We all know speed is overplayed as a factor, so it is just one big con.

I say this. If speed was such a big evil in the same way DUI then why is it not an automatic ban to break the limit. Plain and simple, it is so they can go back and have three more sessions of putting their hand in your wallet.

What purpose is there in sending someone a NIP two weeks after the incident. You need to stop them there and then and deal with it. Just like good old fashioned policing.

One further thing. The people who I think get a raw deal out of this are the police. I hear a lot of criticism of the police acting like tax collectors etc. I believe this governments obsession with taxing speed is doing nothing but harm for the police/public relationship.

In North Wales, the police vans have the luminous yellow speed camera symbol painted in full view on the rear of the van, so you can see it from a distance. It's therefore a huge disappointment that the deceitful force has painted the vans entirely in bright luminous colours, like an explosion in the paint store of an infant school, such that the symbol is not clearly identifiable until you're about 10 feet from it.

Surely seeing a camera van will make you check and reduce speed if neccesary to PREVENT speeding, not hide it to catch you. For instance, the camera van is in plain sight, so you slow down if you're going a little over and continue to drive safely, however, if the van is hidden away to catch speeders, then you go past the van, get a fine and points, and then have an accident due to your speed (because obviously all accidents are a result of speeding... ) So yes, they get your money and punish you, but another accident is caused. Thus prooving speed cameras do not work :) BAM!

There is more than enough technology available to actually prevent any car from speeding if only the government would make it mandatory at point of manufacture. Some is very simple and some is complex but all in all you could prevent speeding IF IT WAS THAT IMPORTANT TO DO SO.

Consider that instead of actually stopping speed we have the alternative approach of the dirty tricks and tactics of the government (not the police) to get their hands on our cash.

A couple of years ago I saw ANPR cameras disguised within cats eyes - FFS. I dont know if they have received type approval for use in law enforcement but it will only be a matter of time because the technology is so simple and robust.
