michael
Yet another classic being given the Hollywood treatment, this time it's the Korean flick "Oldboy" - with Will Smith For anyone who hasn't seen the original grab a copy now before the hype starts, at least you'll be in a position to complain about how bad the new one is. Annoyingly the DVD usually sells for about £6.99 but it's suddenly doubled in price, any connection I wonder? Play are quoting an RRP of £15.99 but have it listed at as much as £38.44 on Playtrade. http://www.variety.com/VR1117995429.html Original on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/ Also sounds as though Will's son Jaden is going to play the lead in the Karate Kid remake *sigh*
jamesmark
I wonder if Will Smith will eat an Octopus? (or whatever it was)
Mike
Loved the original I wonder if they'll remake Ichi The Killer with Owen Wilson at some point?
Tannhauser
I've not heard of 'Oldboy', I'll try and get it. What, in the opinions of the learned panel, are the dumbest Hollywood remakes of all time? Here are my votes: The Vanishing Mr. Deeds Planet of the Apes Sommersby I've not seen I am Legend or the original version of Vanilla Sky, so can't comment on those. AndrewOW
War of the Worlds (Steven Speilberg) for me, even though the 'original' wasn't brilliant, but it was such a waste of a perfect story IMO.
Mike
AI was a futuristist riff on the Pinocchio story... and that's probably the worst film I have ever seen.

Maybe you should've asked the opposite question. What Hollywood remakes have been worthwhile?
bolarbag
Funnily enough watched this the other night for the first time after borrowing it about 6months ago:rolleyes: What an ending!
Tannhauser
Maybe you should've asked the opposite question. What Hollywood remakes have been worthwhile? The Magnificent Seven The Fly Cape Fear (much prefer the deNiro version) The Thing Mike, I haven't seen AI, I'll look out for it. Good call on War of the Worlds. I thought of another: The Time Machine. The original is so corny, and the action is truly laughable, but the script is mostly really good and it at least has a stab at making a point. The remake is a just another watchable action flick with great effects.
KaoriFan
Few, if any, Hollywood remakes of Asian movies are any good. these originals are far superior to the Hollywood remakes: Ring (trilogy) and other Ring movies The Grudge Infernal Affairs (trilogy) dread to think what they will do to My Sassy Girl, the original is a classic film. and there are other Asian movies that are ruined by Hollywood. One Japanese movie that turned out great was Kurosawa's, Kagemusha, which also had work done on it by George Lucas. but not many from the west work on Asian movies. i find the problem i have with them, you lose the original Asian mysticism and character background. most seem to not explore that in depth in the Hollywood versions. today, i was reading that Will Smith's son is going to star in a remake of the Karate Kid, another waste of time remake. wonder who they will chose to play Noriyuki Morita's part. Tannhauser
This is my favourite bit in the original 'Time Traveller', when the traveller finds the collective wisdom of mankind has turned into books that have decayed into dust. What have you done? Thousands of years of building and rebuilding, creating and re-creating so that you can let it crumble to dust. [With one hand he grabs the Young Man and shakes him]. A million yesterdays of sensitive men dying for their dreams. For what? So you can swim and dance and play?... I am returning to my time! Not to tell of the uselessness of the struggle - not to tell of the hopeless future - but only so that I can die among men! Corny for sure, but kind of stirring. It has an evergreen message within it IMO, whereas the new one wasn't even watchable to the end!

My pick would be Tim Brooke-Taylor Kurosawa and Lucas were good friends, and Lucas was the executive in charge of the international release of Kagemusha. Even Francis Ford Coppola was involved in the international version. Ran, i have to agree, is my equal favourite Kurosawa movie along with Kagemusha. maybe i am a bit biased towards Kagemusha, as it had the gorgeous Momoi Kaori in it i have just finished watching a 50 episode Japanese series 'Fuurin Kazan' (Samurai Banners) which is about Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, amongst others. interesting list, it is a close your eyes and pick one list. Tannhauser
interesting list, it is a close your eyes and pick one list. It's a "who would be a very poor choice to play that role?" list, on the grounds that remakes largely f**k things up. .

Rob
Stallone's Get Carter is pretty bad, I can't see Hollywood using such similar taboo themes for Oldboy. Will Smith would never be seen doing "that."
