Drain unblocking stuff

Supragal

Recommended Posts

You lot always seem to be able to answer any question posed... my bath plug hole is partially blocked. Now, taking it all apart and clearing it out is a boys job so I'm hoping there is some magic stuff I can pour down there that will fix it?

It will be blocked with my hair as is always the case.

Any recommendations on what actually works?

'Drain Free' or some other similar stuff. You'll get it in Tesco or Sainsbury's. Be careful with it though as it's caustic and will burn you if you get it on your skin.

Reckon it's hardcore enough? Someone said the off the shelf stuff doesn't really do it... didn't want to spend money and not have it work...

If you use any of the stuff out of B & Q etc Rosie it will work but take care, wear gloves and don't stand with your face over the drain when you pour it in - arms length jobby if you have no goggles. Know a guy who got badly scarred when caustic reacted with something in the drain and blew back. Its unlikely but take precautions anyway

go to a plumbers merchant and buy dambuster, its high in sulphuric acid so will do the job. Be careful using it though as if you get it on your skin it will be very painful :)

Yeah I can imagine!! I think I'll keep the door closed else Stig will do something ridiculous and hurt himself.

Sounds like the stuff I use, thick black liquid, about 98% sulphuric but does the job every time:) Wear safety glasses too in case you get splashes in your eyes.

nope, plastics have a sufficient resistance to the acid. especially dranage piping. human erm droppings also contain a mixture of chemicals and acids that eat plastic so these plastics have an extra ingrediant to protect against them. also the acid reacts at the blockage which once open makes the water gush through, the acid wont have enough time to sit on the plastic to damage it.

You don't need and caustic or `orrible and expensive potions, just buy a decent plunger and have at it with a few inches of water in the bath. You can even make a decent plunger with a stiff C/V boot gaiter, a Jubiliee clip and piece of dowel, if you are the Blue Peter type.

And some sticky backed plastic too, surely? :)
