Gerry
It's funny how quick you (humans) get used to things... Google just helped me out - again, it's brilliant. This time it was a virus that got past, then disabled AVG. I simply Googled the message that it was giving and five minutes later I'd downloaded a program and fixed it (had to reinstall AVG though). I use it all the time, at work for finding details from phone numbers, phone numbers from post codes etc etc. I can Google Map a prospective customers place of work whilst he's on the phone to see how big a place he has etc etc. It's helped me re-wire lighting (that had old coloured wires in it) and explain the difference between a turbo & supercharger so i don't sound so stupid on here. A wonder of the age I recon... G

Pete
We used Compuserve, Gopher, newsgroups, IRC and Mosaic. Oh and email newsletter subscription type groups, plus other yummy UNIX powered services.
jamesmark
Used altavista, lycos, excite and a few others. Still use altavista as google sometimes is not that great i.e. searching for images altavista is far better.

Gerry
asked my dad Best answer so far... OK for you smarties out there I'll re-title it. "What did we do before everybody had PC's (with massive search engines on them)" ? Suppose the answer was Books, Yellow Pages, Directory Enquiries and guessing... Carl_S
I used something called intellisearch's bullseye. there used to be a free version that they had. I'm tending not to use google anymore, as there appears to be an issue with it of late that I find offensive.

3LL
hehe i actually remember the net b4 google, the main thing to use was a program that searched various search engines, you used to find that things could be listed on one search engine but not another.aaah back in the day.. altavista, lycos, ask jeeves, netscape and a whole host of other smaller sized search engines! lol
Axle
Somehow, the effectiveness of Google kind of makes it a bore these days. Atleast back in the day, you had to make some effort to find what you needed, making the accomplishment all the sweeter. If it wasnt for google i would not have found this site... Come to think of it.. Thank feck for google. Google for world domination...
stevie_b
"What did we do before everybody had PC's (with massive search engines on them)" ? Saturday morning spent down the local library poring over multiple volumes of the Encyclopedia Brittanica.

Gaz Walker
Come to think of it.. Thank feck for google. Google for world domination... When you think about it, Google has made the world *so* much more efficient - its probably saved everyone weeks of work over the years. I love Google Gaz. JustGav
We used Compuserve, Gopher, newsgroups, IRC and Mosaic. Oh and email newsletter subscription type groups, plus other yummy UNIX powered services. Aaaah, gopher and irc, now you are talking my language.. I miss the old gopher to be honest, when things were all text based and not this fancy GUI that everyone seems to think is the ONLY way computers work. as there appears to be an issue with it of late that I find offensive. Almost as offensive as your snobbish signature.... When you think about it, Google has made the world *so* much more efficient - its probably saved everyone weeks of work over the years. I love Google Gaz. Keep an eye on google, they have a few more tricks up their sleeve. Google is NOT a search engine but a massive super computer.
