Mother in law !

:D Can't remember ever having a prefixed rant before, so heres one.

We gave her a 32" crt TV a few years back...totally free. It stopped working a year or so later, and cost them £100 or so to fix. I was unaware of this till just now.

A few months ago, they bought a 6 month old 28" LCD from my son for £200. Just a few minutes ago, I took a call from her and she told me the LCD had stopped working a few weeks back and she'd had it repaired at a cost of £250. She then asked me to give her the money for the repair, as my son had sold her a dud. I took it quite well and explained that things didn't go that way...she then told me that as I had paid for the old crt to be repaired all those years ago, she assumed I would do the same again...WTF ?, I didn't pay for that, my wife must have done behind my back.

She wasn't going to give in, and ramped up my already dodgy blood pressure by telling me she would take the £250 out of the £600 we had lent her last month....WTF WTF ??, WHAT £600 ?.

Something else I had no knowledge of...Don't worry she said, when they die, we can have the swiss chalet style shed in their garden...thats worth £15,000....WTF WTF WTF ???, £15K for a shed ? And she's tapping my wife behind my back for a loan ?.

I'd started steaming by then, but then she ended the phone call by saying if I didnt have the money for the TV repair right now, we could give it to her as a Christmas present....and they wouldn't be expecting anything else....and then she asked me what time we should meet in Bournemouth next saturday as my wife had promised we would treat them to Harry Ramsdens and the Aquarium....

Families and money don't mix, I got a call from my sister in law about nine months back, nearly in tears asking for a £300 loan to pay off a £1500 banks loan she had got 18mths before WITHOUT my brothers knowledge (wtf !). She hadn't kept up the repayments and they were threatening legal action.

I transferred the cash and have seen only £50 of it back in 9 mths!

It's not the money but the deception to my brother, at the end of the day he probably saw none of the money she borrowed and she was so vague as to why she took the loan out in the first place. It annoys me as I can't get too angry with her for not paying me back as I'm now involved in the lies :(

As someone previously said, money and family don't mix! We've had a lot of greif from family members arguing over a recently departed's money and possesions. It really saddens me that all they care about is what they get out of a death.

You need to have words with your mrs and find out what she's been giving them behind your back. It's one thing giving someone a TV, but paying for repairs on it is another! I think the mother in law comes to expect your mrs to pay for things and lend them money now, as she has probably done it so many times in the past? Your mother in law needs to wake up, and your mrs needs to stop giving all your money away! You'll be finding yourself in a financial crisis at some point down the line and wonder where all your money has gone!

Your mother in law sounds like an unreasonable nightmare, and sorry to say it, but it sounds like the wife needs to trust you and speak to you more often, rather than keeping secrets.

Quite right. I've always given them too much leeway when making allowances...Mother in Laws from Yorkshire, as all the worst ones are. Some would say its not really her fault.

As for the wife, I don't tell her how I spend my money...some would say its only fair that she doesn't tell me how she spends my money.
