Terminator
Having slightly pushed the envelope with my high compression engine. I am looking at ways of reducing the chance of detonation. So far we have a det free motor, on NGK 7's copper, and now NGK 8's iridium. Looking around at the racing scene, detonation sources in very high performance engines include spark plugs. So shortened central electrodes and smaller or no ground electrodes are essential for keeping plugs cooler. This reduces risk of the inevitable hot spot the end of the plug causes, by drawing more of the plugs heat into the head. There is a trade off as the shorter the nose the more difficult the ignition of the mixture. I am looking into the use of race plugs and would welcome the input of any tuners/ engine builders here, as this may be of benefit to any single turbo MKIV making serious boost. Data and examples of plug tip design from NGK can be found here http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showpost.php?p=2168949&postcount=
b_have
Interesting thread Phil, I remember using the centre discharge type (no tips) in a very det prone Kawasaki race engine with good results. At the time, NGK recommended them to me following their success with Cosworth race engines. This was many years ago, don't have the NGK part number anymore but I recall it was a 'C' type as in picture E.
Chris Wilson
NGK have a race division, seek their advice, they have never let me down when i have followed their recommendations.
