SteveR
This is working at MoD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire, working for a company called QinetiQ... I'm a Project Manager for the very same, but I'm based up here in Malvern. I have some flight trials planned for next Summer using the company BACS1-11 (IIRC!) which is kept at Boscombe. Hope you enjoy your new job, let me know if I can be of help as you settle in; explaining general company stuff or whatever.
SteveR
tell us more if you can, like what sort of things the company does. http://www.qinetiq.com There are around 9,500 UK employees, and we keep buying American companies, I think our US side are not quite but not far off being as big. Sounds like an interesting company, with some fascinating divisions, must be very rewarding to work for them. I'm envious.
SilverSoop
Well, I had my first day yesterday and what a bloody disaster!! When I got there, what I thought the job was - was totally something different, they told me that there was loads of overtime and infact there was NONE!! So, tbh, the wage wasn't all that great and also travelling 80 miles a day I was relying on overtime, I was promised overtime and there was actually none available... I was quite p****d off when they told me that!! When I was on the PC at work, I met 4 seperate worker's who all bitched about each other behind each other's back...not a good morale there either... And to top it all off, the rotor told me in advance what and when I was working during christmas time...I have never worked Christmas before, so I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of it... They also don't have public holidays, so you are forced to work through them, that is quite rare in a job, I wasn't happy about that either! And none of this was explained this to me during the interview... At Christmas time, my rotor showed: On the 20th-23rd Dec - rest day 23rd Dec- Days 24th-27th Dec - Nights 27th-30th Dec - Rest day 30th-2nd Dec/Jan - Nights 2nd - 6th Jan - Rest day Crap or what?!?! I thought they may have made me work one or the other, but not both! So at the end of the day, I said to them that I wouldn't be returning as I cannot afford to be on that wage and the Job wasn't what I thought it would be... So I am now back to square one, hunting for a Job...
ivan
Ah well, maybe next time. I'm not surprised about the shifts - new boys always get the crappy ones.
stevie_b
That's a real shame Shane. As you've got DC, maybe look up Dstl to see if they have any jobs going?

For info: DSTL are now entirely based down in Portsdown. I didn't realise anyone at QQ worked shifts (or bank holidays!), I guess staff who support operational kit are different. SilverSoop
Ah well, maybe next time. I'm not surprised about the shifts - new boys always get the crappy ones. I know Ken I am gutted really so I am on the look out again... All the 'favourites' get the OT which I think is unfair so there is no point in me travelling that distance with no OT available... That's a real shame Shane. As you've got DC, maybe look up Dstl to see if they have any jobs going? DSTL??? For info: DSTL are now entirely based down in Portsdown. SteveR
What did they say when you said I quit, on day 1!?
stevie_b
Dstl = Defence Scientific & Technical Laboratories. http://www.dstl.gov.uk/ Several years ago all the MoD's R&D was taken care of by a govt agency called DERA (don't worry what it stands for). This was partially privatised a few years ago, but the govt wanted to retain part of it. QinetiQ is the part that was privatised, Dstl is the part that was retained by the govt. The two organisations do similar work.
