Guest time2die
Ok this is a little strange and i find it hard to believe myself but for the past 3 years i have had nothing but handling problems since taking my car in for a mot. The car failed on worn out rear Bridgestone tyres,to cut a long story short look at this thread that i started some time back. http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=154892. Chris wilson had this car some 18 months back and checked it over and told me it was spot on and drove better than most supra cars that he has had at his place. Since i know my car and have had it for the past 5 years i still thought the car handled really bad, tram lined ,veered all over the place and felt like i was driving on ice and the car had a mind of its own. I could drive down the a49 and yank the steering left/right and the car hardly moved ,the steering felt loose and really weird and i had no sense of grip from the tyres when holding the steering wheel.... Anyway get this..? So this has been going on for nearly 3 years and besides Chris wilson its been to umpteen other places all claiming that the car was ok or they had made alterations. So i am sitting on my drive last Tuesday starring at the dash board and dreading taking the car on a journey,i decided to yank the lever that adjust the steering wheel position [Not that i noticed it was in a unfamiliar place in the first place] any way after bringing the column down to probably its lowest position i continued along the farm track to go to my destination. Within seconds of starting out i felt that the whole feeling in the car had changed,i now could feel the steering column had tightened up and the car felt back to how i remember it. So i could not wait to get it onto a a road and test it out properly, put my foot down and this car handled like i remember in the past and everything felt so right. I felt in total control and even yanking the steering/left right made the car respond like i expected. Question...? Is this possible............Changing the steering wheel position should only do that and should not have a major impact on how a car handles surely.. Anyway its weird and i am so delighted that my car now feels and handles like it did those few years back. I can only presume that the guy who did the mot moved the steering column and i had not noticed, but moving a steering column should not make the car handle like crap...... Whats your thought about this...I'm curious. This is not my imagination and i am not going mad........Since moving the steering lever position this car has now changed completely and is back to its brilliant best after wasting money on set up and 3 sets of new tyres. Amazing fact but true.........
dani_r
That's the most random thing I've heard about a cars handling! I'm no mechanic but perhaps some kind of steering column problem? Bushes? I'm sure CW will have the answer!
michael
Have you been to a doctor to have your arms checked out?
Tricky-Ricky
I can only think of two possible scenarios, 1 the UV joint that allows the wheel to pivot is worn in on particular position/plane quite unlikely though, 2 the coupling to the steering rack is slightly loose IE worn splines, and now the position is changed and possibly pushed the colunm further down it has taken up the slack.
