benkei
laminated poll tax? That's the one If England is already the most surveyed country in the world, why do we still need MORE surveylance?? It obviously doesn't work! And charging us for the pleasure is rubbing salt in the wounds! Besides, we know what the Government's track record is with personal data! They'll just end up leaving it on a train somewhere! I'm innocent, I've got nothing to hide at all, but I don't want all my data given to the Government and have ANOTHER card I need to try and fit in my wallet! For the purpose of... WHAT exactly? I have a driver's licence, a birth certificate, and a passport. I know who I am and I can prove it, anything else is just a poor attempt to leap ito the future like they've seen on TV What's next, flying cars powered off rubbish, or tubes that transport you to your destination? Oh oh oh! What about abolishing currency like they did in Star Trek?! That'd cure the financial crisis! No money - no problem! I should really apply for a job in the Government, I have lots of crazy ideas to waste money on.

keancy
I am not a big fan of the cost of these but I do think that it will bother "dodgy" folk more than anyone else. If you have nothing to hide, then why are you bothered?? H. Having carried an ID card for 22 years, the idea of carrying another one doesn't bother me at all. However, the idea of having to pay for it is a step too far for me. I am not bothered as it is a legal requirement in Germany so nothing new to me. The thing bothering me is pricing. If it was a one off first time you get it (as was back in my day in Germany) then ok but if you have to pay for example every time you move or when it runs out of date like a passport then it's wrong to be honest. Plus doesn't a picture driving licence have the same effect really?

Benyon
I'm not opposed to them as long as they are implemented properly, but having to pay for the privileged of being monitored more closely.. Belgium seem to have the right idea. How often do they need to be changed and how hard wearing are they. Don't want to be called a terrorist if the laminate peals up. You can say that again:eyebrows:
