Street Lights being switched off

Maybe if they DID put a speed camera there, it would result in people going too fast down the road to make the camera flash to increase visibility for a short period.

It's a great way for the goverment to generate revenue, they don't have to put the lights on, AND you, the motorist, once again get punished for the stupidity of the council :)

Well it has had a part to play in a death near me. You may have seen on the news that a woman in Llanfyllen, a large village 10 miles from mine, was killed last week. She was in a play area with her teenage son using a motorised go kart. Unfortunately while she was riding it she clipped a kerb (I believe) causing her to lose control and crashed into a fence where a post went through her skull:(

Granted doing that in the dark wasn't a sensible thing to be doing but it was a play area and should have been lit as it was not many weeks prior. Im sure if it was lit a tradgidy could possably been avoided. Unfortunately it can't be proven.

Another ill thought out idea from 'The Powers That Be'.

firstly, i do not see why we are taking such a lead in enforcing carbon emissions and trying to lead the world in this. we only throw out a small percentage of said emissions. turning off streetlights is not gonna make much of a dent in the world emissions we are trying to save.

Before we start, maybe it would be idea to bring down the major players, Russia, China, USA, African and Arab States to a level playing field, make them suffer first and take on the majority of the cuts.

I know things have to be taken care of with regards to the future wellbeing of the planet and agree with that. but why is it always the UK that seems to want to lead the world, and then everyone gets hit with big bills.

the Governments' crazy idea to get people off the road, put fuel costs up, but that is not a fair way. the only people that will be kept of the road (for the most part) are the ones who can't afford to pay the hiked up prices. Same with most things these days, the poor and less well-off suffer.

Also, losing the streetlights will make it less safe for people going out at night, not just car drivers, but pedestrians. if you don't want to drive, or don't drive, public transport is next to useless for anyone not living in a town. wonder if they thought of people standing waiting for a bus or train, if they can't see around them what is going on.

I better not get started on Speed Cameras. it would not be bad if they caught idiots tailgating you or acting a complete moron on the road, but they never concentrate on the major reasons of road incidents/accidents, just someone a few miles over the limit.

Damn! That's grim!! Was she wearing a helmet??

No. Like I said it not very sensible doing it the dark and not wearing a helmet. And obviously she can only be held accountable for that. But what Im saying is that maybe with street lights on she may have avoided the collision. Who knows? I suppose it's sort of hypathetical (sp?) but an example of what things could be put down to street lights being turned off.
