Advantages of VVTI

Interesting jake, thanks for input but are you saying the tiptronic is chronic

Some people like it, others (like Jake) didn't get on with it.

Myself and Branners (amongst others) like ours quite a lot.

(I think Jake just needs a stick to hold onto to make him feel more like a man ;) )

If you transfer to VVti, the cam difference is a minor concern. Most of the loom is different so it's a pretty big job to swap from non-VVti to VVti.

IMO unless you know exactly what you're doing it's not worth the bother if you're going from an NA to a VVti car. Further modifications are more complex and the slight advantage of VVti torque isn't worth it.

It really depends what your aims are for the car.

I like my Tiptronic.. but going manual because I need more power and the auto box won't last long.

VVTI is great, but if you're going single some time soon, then auto and tiptronic are a world of pain. There are so few choices of ECU to do the auto 'properly' and then you have to control the VVTI and that narrows your choices even more to really silly expensive kit.

VVTI = expense if you're modding extensively. If you only plan to go BPU, then I couldn't recommend VVTI enough. Otherwise, stick to a normal head.

Not that. I like auto TTs but not Tips.

The harsh Tip gear changes (in Tip/Manual mode) and the deal-breaker 'kickdown to third gear at full throttle' fault is why I'll never have another Tip, or recommend one to anybody.

It's fine on KPH cars but on MPH converted Tips it's a disaster. The Traction Control keeps cutting in all the time - even at really low speeds when there's zero chance of losing traction - think what the usual crap Supra TC is like and then imagine it 5x worse.

The other problem is the kickdown fault with MPH converted Tips: even if you are doing 120-130mph, when you put your foot down for full throttle the Tip gearbox will change down to third gear - which will put the revs into the redline. It will not change up to top gear unless you back off the throttle. It's a major pain in the ass.

Hi guys, I'm a newbie here.

I'm trying to make up my mind deciding between a gto, 300zx or a supra (would have to be a turbo and a manual). Just have a quick question, is it true that the vvti has a lot of headgasket issues ? My common thought was supra = bullet proof. Also which is the most sought after model? I would usually tend to go after shorter wheel base lighter models...etc

Thanks for any input.

I've never heard of any issues with the head gasket on the VVTI.... touch wood.... Good luck with your choice...

PS: Out of those three you can't go wrong with the Supra.

they prety much all weigh the same. the uk specs are heavier but not much.

vvti adds a small ammount of torque and something like 5-10hp, although ive also seen that it doesnt add any!

Ive never heard of or seen any head gasket issues on vvti, non vvti or NA supras on the forum.

The most sought after model varies on your opinions. I guess it would be a UK spec manual as they are rare, have optional extras as standard that jspec didnt have and are easier to ensure.

Or a single turbo'd 6 speed aerotop, which they never made (people doing conversions created them).

Gto's are slow and troublesome mechanicly ive heard. They also look a bit dated if you ask me.

The 300 is a wedge of cheese, has a dificult engine bay to work on so labour costs are large. Its also slower than it looks.

The supra is timless, rustproof, bulletproof and fast :)

I've never had any of those issues and mine is using a MPH converter (some crazy no-name-brand jobbie...)

All MPH converters are not created equal - you want one that outputs to the odo head a 5/8ths signal to display speed in MPH accurately but which also outputs the unaltered speed input to the ECU and related systems so as not to effect them in the way Jake describes.

For the odd import I've done myself, my Dad has converted them using chips I sourced from Far East Services:

http://www.importedvehicles.co.uk

http://www.importedvehicles.co.uk/electronic_speedos.htm (Supra VVTi gets special mention here!)

I did my research into it before my first import in '03 I think it was and concluded that company made & sold the best converter chips. Indeed they were good enough to be selected by Subaru UK to convert 'UK model' Imprezas based on JDM specials...

Cheers,

Brian.
