Overhauling UK Spec Turbos

Right I know my oil seals are failing due to some nice blue/white smoke once my engine gets warm. I can not afford to pay someone to take them off and get them sorted, so I have a quote from Turbo Technics to have the seals and bearings replaced and the turbos re-balanced.

What I need to know is what parts I need to replace when refitting the turbos back on the car. I am going to attempt all the work myself over a few weeks or so. I am guessing I need to replace gaskets and turbo bolts..?

If anyone can list the parts I will need with Toyota Part Numbers it would be very helpfull. Also any handy hints to make this job a bit easier it would be very much appriciated. Once again my car is UK Spec.

Many Thanks

James

I don`t want to try and put you off doing this and take my hat off to anyone that doesn`t mind "having a go",but,This is a REAL pig of a job as the uk`s have alot more stuff to get in the way.

I used Tlicence`s turbo removal guide and found it very helpful, expect alot of swearing, cut knuckles aswell, i can`t really help with refitting bits but would of thought ex-mani gaskets, turbo oil gaskets.

Thanks for the advice, but I simply dont have £1500 + to pay some to do the work for me, then £400 + to overhaul the turbos. I am going to take my time, and im not a complete novice when it comes to mechanics, not really any comparision but I did a full engine rebuild on my runaround, so its worth a go. Worst comes worse I can bit all the bits in a box and have the car trailered somewhere local. As for swearing and cut knuckles thats just another day at the office :)

EDIT: Found the guide, well the one for the Blitz Big Twin Installation, however most of the pictures are not coming up :(

They're not too bad to do, you might need a LOT of heat to get those exhaust bolts and nuts undone, let alone a few that might snap, WD40 is usefull too, might be an idea to get the top pipes and heatshield off and soak the lot in WD40 the night before

TLicence's guide is awsome too, get it checked out!

Try Plusgas instead of WD40

I know there is a budget to consider James, but going through all that (and its NOT easy) to then come out the other end with about the same power seems odd.

While you have them off and in bits, and with no rush til the nice weather, why not spend a bit and have them mildly modified or something - maybe even see if any cheap hybrids come up for sale?

1 thing you may want to get is an extra long 14" spanner to undo the nuts under the manifold, you have to come up from underneath to reach these suckers as there`s no access from above, feel free to pm me when your doing it and i`ll try to help as much as i can as i will know what you`re going through,:)

Well I have been quoted £195 + Vat per unit for bearings and seals, then rebalanced and tested at Turbo Technics.

Bignum thanks for the tip and the offer of advice.

Paul, thats what I paid last time, however saying that, that was with a certain ex trader who ripped a lot of people off. I am just praying that when I get them off they are still UK Spec Tubs and they have not been replaced by J-specs and my UK's were sold off.
