Digsy
Aye up. Over the last few days I've noticed a change in the behaviour of my oil pressure light on cold start. Previously (i.e. from when I bought the car over three years ago, until the other week) the oil pressure light has taken about 1.5 seconds to go out on cold start. While the weather was cold I noticed a difference. The light would go out after about 1.5 seconds, then flash on very briefly, then go off again. This was quite repeatable but seemed to happen only when the weather was cold. Then quite unexpectedly, one morning I started the engine and the oil pressure light went out straight away. I put this down to a one-off oddity but it did it again. SO far this has only happened twice. On warm starts the light always goes straight out. There are obviously no warning lights when the engine is running. So I'm wondering whether the pressure relief valve in the oil pump might be sticking either open or closed for a split second when the engine is cold. Do any of the symptoms sound familiar? Digsy
Well at least that will elminate it I suppose. I'll see if I can find someone who has a spare one kicking about.
mikeb
Could be down to the non return valve in the oil filter. I guess you will have been through several over the three years. The valves are notoriously unreliable, so some filters will let the oil drain back more quickly than others. This could also be affected by using different grade oils. As long as it goes out within 4 or 5 seconds max, I wouldn't worry about it.
