Could It Be My Bearing

Hi all, yesterday i drove the car for about 3 miles to a friends and then the same distance back, and due to the car not being used to much my brakes are normaly rusty when i first take it out, this then makes a slight grinding/rubbing sound while im moving until ive braked enough times to remove the rust from the disks, i then had to go out in the car again a few hours later and i braked at some traffic lights and heard a realy horrible metal rubbing/grinding sound. the sound came from the front passanger side. Then as i went to pull away it felt like the car was vibrating and the wheel was struggling to rotate, the sound was continuous but was even louder and felt worse when going round islands or turning.

could this be my bearing or could it be my callipers biting and then not letting go? if i had to discribe the feeling of it, it feels like its snagging like if you were pulling lets say a rope and it kept catching on somthing. not the best explenation but cant think how else to discribe it.

  • 3 weeks later...

Ok sorry for the delay, was going to check the car a few weeks back, but family issue's have meant putting the job off until now. Jacked the car up and span the wheel and the only sound was the slight grinding sound of the disks as they are rusty from lack of use. I then grabbed the wheel on both sides and was very little play, ( i assume there is a tiny amount ) so then i started the car and tried reversing it and the sound was terrible, almost sounds like something is about to snap or fall off, so i assume it must be my bearing, does anyone know of anywhere that can supply a front bearing a.s.a.p

cheers

Edit, the sound is worse when turning, when i drive slow in a straight line the sound is the speed of the wheel turning i.e faster as i speed up, but when you start to turn it sounds much worse.

As Nic says, that's more than likely to be your bearing.

If you have to, don't drive it at speed as there's a chance that it may seize up.

A good Supra specialist will be able to source the bearing and any associated parts from Toyota, and spend about 2-3 hours putting it right for you.

Cheers for the advice guys,

I would wager you have Jap spec brakes and the slider pins the caliper moves on are seized up. I have exchange caliper brackets in stock.

Yes they are Jspec brakes, How easy is it to change the brackets Chris? an how much for replacements?

Ill try this first as i dont realy want to be moving the car more than i need to. Failing that then ill have to order a new bearing, do you have bearings in stock Chris?
